That's a stunningly beautiful piece of industrial art. Thanks.

"Max power (est.): 526 hp@ 10700 rpm (bmep: 14,6 bar ; 211 psi), dimensioned for Tri-Turbo 1005 hp" from a 2.7L! Would love to hear it run.

For a MS thesis project, someone has a deep pockets or really good finding.

Now that I would put in the back of a 911.

Icemaster 02-12-2007 04:05 PM

Not sure it would fit.

Nontheless, wow.

Hugh R 02-12-2007 04:40 PM

Stunning! I'd love to see how it actually works.

I'd love to hear it run, nine cylinders must make some kind of music as they pass through 8k looking for 10k.

I used to own a 5 cylinder MB 300D.

To this day, if there is a 5 cyl. MB within a half mile, I can pick it out.

I'd imagine that a 9 cyl. engine would have a similarly distinct sound.

Interesting engine.
With the 60-0-60 layout, it seems the firing order is not evenly spaced.
That is 6 of the cylinders would fire 240 crankshaft degrees apart, the outside cylinders. The 3 center cylinders would fire between every two outside cylinders, giving an uneven pulse.
That is, said another way, at 0, 60, 120, 240, 300, 360 480, 540 & 600 crankshaft degrees.
One outside bank firing at 0, 240 & 480 degrees.
The other outside bank firing at 120, 360 & 600 degrees.
The center bank interspersed at 60, 300 & 540 degrees.
Leaving gaps at 180, 420 & 660 degrees.
Am I missing something?

I want to hear it run... sure looks nice.

Mattias became father so he wanted to get rid of the car. I just bought a flat so I didn't have the time to finish it. I still have some bits and parts over so I just need to settle down before diving into car project again.

3/8ths of a radial engine.

Janus, that is too cool! That kid must have some deep pockets or access to some serious equipment. I have to think it was heavily funded by an auto maker.

It got me wondering and thinking about other W engines. Here is one from VW. Some of you may have seen it. It is in production. Here is the site: www.seriouswheels.com/cars/top-VW-W12-Roadster.htm

a W12! Janus thanks agian for making me wonder!

That engine is quite a bit different in that is is a "Double V" engine instead of a "W" engine. Each of what appears to be a bank is in reality a V-6 with only 15 deg. between each bank, with a common head. Interesting layout. And, the article says there's a "Double V" 16 cylinder model as well. The mind boggles.

cashflyer 02-16-2007 01:13 PM

I've run plenty of 9 cylinder engines.

But they were all round.
