Bill V and other NY'ers, how bad is the snow?

I've been hearing tales of up to 8' (yes ' and not "). Any pictures if you got them.

The big snow is limited to a relatively small area in the lee of the great lakes, the Tug hill plateau and western Adirondack's.

The rest of us are just freezing our collective asses off. So much for all that blather about global warming, this is one of the worst stretches of nasty cold I have seen in my life.

I believe Oswego (county is under a state of emergency) is the hardest hit community and yes, in that immediate vacinity they have localized areas of 5 - 6 FT and 2- 3 FT more forecast over the weekend.

here is a website for some picks, look at all the pics as the snow gets deeper as you get into the later shots.

Great pics. Call me crazy, but I love to see snow like this. Haven't had a snowfall close to that in decades here. Unlike the occasional 6-12" storm here, storms like that, you really have a reason to go to the store and stock up on batteries and toilet paper.

Call me crazy but you can keep that white crap to yourselves.

I took my 3 y/o for a ride in the Targa this afternoon to deliver a survey to a client and we had the top out and the windows down.

One of the reason I have a hard time moving firther north. Cold hurts, hot is just uncomfortable.

Any of you dealing with this, you have my sympethy.

i'm on south side of Long Island. I haven't even looked for where the snow shovel is this winter. It stopped snowing around here soon after I bought a snow blower 2 Nov's ago.

If it is cold, you can simply add more layers of clothing, when it is hot and humid, unless you stay inside in the AC, you are kind of screwed I wish we had MORE snow this winter in Ohio, right now, there is about an inch on the ground, which is not enough to enjoy snowmobiling and ski flying

Some think that anyone living north of the Mason-Dixon line is doing so in agony. Any state without a true four seasons would bore my to tears. Maybe when I turn 80 and live in a trailer outside of Orlando, will I realize everything I've "missed" living in the North.

Dateline: Syracuse.

Most of the snow has belted the area described above by Bill V.
Perhaps strangely to those not familiar with our terroir, the worst of it is not the furthest north. It's about halfway between here and Watertown, in the environs of Mexico, Oswego and Hastings (Google map 'em).

The reason, IMHO, is that we had an unusually mild early winter. As a result, the Great Lakes remained unfrozen, and with all the "fetch" the cold air has over open water (instead of ice) that area is getting a ton of lake-effect snow at a time of year that the worst of it is usually over.

In prior years, the LE snow would come earlier in the winter, before the lakes froze, and by this point there would be no liquid water available, so it'd just be very cold and windy.

Evidently we're in for it tonight/tomorrow. Thing is, tho'... we're geared up to handle ridiculous amounts of snow. Our DPW, plows, sanders, etc. can keep primary and secondary roads serviceable, if not clean, at sustained snowfall rates of a few inches an hour.

AFAIC, if the roads are open, there's not much difference between 2" of snowfall and 24" of snowfall. 140" is another story (storey!) entirely.

They actually circulated the "office closing due to inclement weather" policy via email this afternoon, so I guess someone is taking the threat seriously.

From 8 pm 'til 8 am we received about 11" of snow, and the roads on the way in the morning were not bad (go iX!!!!). The mailbox was almost completely buried by the plow.

The only time stuff was greasy was when I got down town, b/c they'd been sanding the roads, which turns it all into slick mush. If it's just snow, the Blizzaks are fabulous.

Wish we would get a decent storm here. This was last weekend in da UP of Michigan. A well set up sled is more fun then my 911. When it hooks up it almost pulls your arms off. And in the deep stuff it is pure joy.

That's about the view from my house right now too. Almost couldn't get out, 4' drifts at every door but 1.

Just cleaning up after the storm, was in CT when all the snow hit up here. About 60 miles northwest of Albany, NY. Had to put on snowshoes to get to the house when I arrived. Time for a beer or two.
