The turbo would be the first thing to go. I'm not interested in a turbo on anything but a Turbo. That's just my opinion, tho.

My general rule of thumb is if the outside of the engine looks as bas as that imagine how bad the inside looks! Turn around, walk, look back, then RUN!

Damn, thats a project alright--where would you begin. I have seen a car that has been underwater that is more clean with less corrosion at a local shop. It is sad that someone has let a longhood get that neglected. Katie, you can do better than that for 12k, I would offer him no more than 4-5k, seriously you are looking at over 10 grand in bodywork easily. No PPI means he is hiding something or knows the car has a major issue--RUN fast and far. Maybe we need to get a Pelican group together to go look at it--imagine if 6 or 7 of us showed up at once with ice picks, flashlights, magnets, etc.

I have been following this thread as well. Most of us have gone through what you are. My story is not with a p-car, but its sibling VW. I was around your age (34 now) and was looking for my second car (not at same time). I was going to college a few hours away from L.A. but could get the Recycler (used stuff mag) and looked for the right VW Scirocco. I found it! it claimed to be a canyon racer and looked setup. They also told me it had cams - wrong answer, it did not. I even took it to a VW dealer for the PPI. Turns out the mech who looked at the car was the sellers friend. Story short, I ended up dumping as much or more money to fix the problem the previous owner caused. Good lesson for me. Would have been better to buy a "stock" 16v Scirocco and fixed up right the first time. I am nowhere near the expert on cars, but from those pictures you posted, you will be looking at a lot of work and money to get that car road worthy again. And, as it turns out, it isn't even a coveted 'S' model. If he won't let you take it to another shop for the PPI, there is something wrong. He should at least offer to take it (maybe for a couple of 6 packs) to a shop for you, if, there is nothing to hide. Please think long and hard on this one. It will end up costing you a lot of money in the near future. If you do look at the car again, look at the underside up front. Look to see that the front clip and torsion areas look to be rust free and have no Home Depot clamps holding things together. Anyway, hang in there. You will find the right car. It may not even be the right color, but if it is at the right price, maybe your grandmother would include some fresh paint in the color of your choice in the deal. :) Dave |
Can we see a sideview? I'd like to see if they are true RS flares, or later SC/Carrera flares (they are slightly different). The car looks rough, I'd definately pass on this car and look for a nicer, more original example, or at least a tastefully, reliably modified one. There are signs of rust, body filler (rear quarter near decklid), cheap repaint, bad headliner, etc etc. All stuff that costs a lot of money! This isn't even a 20k car once you make it nice.

I've followed this thread too and have witnessed you grow within these (now) ten pages. Your last comments about the CD along with scenarios about future purchases tells the tale. You have already made up your mind, in my opinion. You have lots of help here in your search, and lots of interest. |
BTW, My old VW mechanic used to live about three hrs. away from his shop. He would drive down early Monday morning and had an apartment here to stay in. On Friday afternoon, he would drive back up to Paso Robles and spend the weekend with his family.

If this car was at all worth it I'd say screw him on the car first...and then if he really takes your fancy and you really feel the need...then screw him ON the car...but honey the car ain't worth it (and I don't need pics of the guy to assume he ain't either!). |

PRO'S 1) It is a Porsche 2) It is Aubergine 3) It is being sold by a cute guy! CON'S 1) Rust 2) Non-original 3) Poor quality paintwork 4) Questionable maintenance 5) Turboed many years ago -> shorter engine life expectancy Feel free to add to either list |
The best thing that could happen here is that this car was sold to someone else.....but it wont happen.
There is NO buyer for this car. At the price being asked only a sucker can be found. This car needs thousands of dollars in repairs. For the money you are talking you can find yourself a nice reliable 911. Dont do it. Think it through. You should try to foucus on something new and get this car out of your head for a while anyway. WHatever you do you will find support here. You will need at least $10,000.00 to keep this car going for a year..........as a project that is! Good luck and god bless you whatever you do:) |

Goes to integrity and/or product knowledge of seller. Even if it was an S - this is way too big a project unless you have endless $$$. I wouldn't tackle it and I own a P-car workshop with a large stock of spares to put this car right. |
Why the hell are you still considering this car? All that has come up during your research has been negative. The VIN confirms its not even an S. I cant wrap my head around why you are still pursueing it. There are much nicer examples with correct mechanicals for comparable prices. By the time you are happy with this car you will have spent twice what it cost you. Everyone is telling you wisely to FORGET ABOUT IT. Im younger than you (20) so not all of this advice is from old men (no offense). I passed on about 6 cars before I found mine. Lets kill this thread.
