I really have to agree with Scott here. At 39 and still single, I don't think women like you exist here in the States. Your pics or your cars...tough call. :D

More on this excellent hot rod, please! :D

Is it possible to convert to a 901 or 915 gearbox to handle the 2.0L engine's power?

lisa_spyder 02-24-2007 01:15 PM

Jim,

Sure - there are several Outlaws fitted with 901s and a couple with 915s that I know of. The 915s of course are bigger and take a lot more "massaging" of the body to get them to fit.

But Dad loved the characteristics of the swing back axle and didn't want to lose that by fitting a 901. He wanted to keep the rear suspension set up of a 356. It was a personal choice for him. Going to 901 meant going to CV shafts etc; hence changing the handling. Also, this car goes almost anywhere. She handles rough roads extremely well at high speed. 356s are renowned for being able to hobble over almost any surface without backing off and this is what he wanted to achieve. Does have disc brakes all round though - the huge 356B drums couldn't handle the weight and speed; despite their size and really great linings.

She's challenging to drive - how do I put this nicely....I can't: it takes balls to drive her hard - simple! She commands your respect very quickly and bites hard if you don't take charge - hence she is very much a "she"! Much like a short wheel based 911...

The 356 trannie handles the power very well as long as you don't abuse it from a standing start. It has a lightweight 2.0LS clutch and flywheel which helps a lot. I can change gear quickly with no slip; I am however not as brutal with the gear change and I may be with a 911 on occasion ;) .

Dad had built many a hotrod - both 356 and 911. This time he was completely selfish about it. He had many years of fun with this one.

Over the next few days I'll compile the specs and start an OT thread - there's lots of interesting tidbits about this car :)

Hey, I'm getting pretty good at this car spotting stuff!

I took a lady-friend to the German autofest (Porsche car show) and she had a good time but really didn't "get it", she would wander off when I would come across a rare 911 and stop to photograph it. I sat in a Boxster a dealer had on display and just about wet my pants, she just looked at me and said "why don't you just buy one?"... uh the don't exactly give these things away  she though the 356's were "cute"... couldn't understand why I was so excited about the 74' 911 with a 2.4... at one point she got bored and started chatting with a nice gentleman... who brought his CGT to display
You did well - it's a pretty distinctive car :) .

I went to GAF in 2005 as it was the 15th Anniversary of the Early S Registry as well. (A 40th b/day pressie). Spent 5 fast and furious days in SoCal hanging with the guys. GAF was fun; the cars were great but the people were why I was there. The swap meet was a bit of a dissapointment though - I had a list of small stuff to look for and didn't find any of it :( . I spent a fair bit of time in the trade hall and in the memorabilia hall looking at stuff, but's that's what I do for a living so it was important for me to see what was on offer.

I can sort of understand why a non-car type girl wouldn't get into it. It is a very specific show and for someone who's not really into cars, once you've walked around once what more is there?

Where are you located? I reckon a more fun thing to take a lady to would be one of the coffee and cars mornings that are now happening at Ford's headquarters - early start though; but I'm sure you could work that out :) .

LOL. My wife kind of gets it, as long as I don't push her to spend too much time at it. Here's a case where she really perks up being around the car stuff...

Though not as interesting to her as the one above, this one might be OK, too.

2005 GAF? That is the one we were at, we may have walked past each other and not even known it! I went to the first one and the swap meet seems to get smaller every year.

lisa_spyder 02-24-2007 02:12 PM

Scott,

Probably did! I spent a fair bit of time at the Early S tent; Chuck was my "ride" from the hotel in Ventura so the least I could do was help out the Early S guys.

He picked me up on the Thursday afternoon from my hotel in LA; we headed out to his place and swapped cars and then "did Mulholland" Chuck's way (FAST)... before heading out for dinner. After 55 hours no sleep I finally crashed headfirst into my plate - Chuck, bless him didn't mind at all and let me "doze"...incredibly embarrassing but very funny :D. I don't do sleep in airplanes very well and didn't sleep at all before hopping on the plane as I was busy sewing a costume for Billy's first school concert that he needed for the night I returned...the things we do!

One other Aussie and one Kiwi were there with me too - I was like the "older sister" in their words; keeping them from buying crappy stuff at the swapmeet! It wasn't all crappy - there was some great stuff there; just not what I needed at the time.

We all had a GREAT time, but the Show seems to be diminishing from previous years. I'd like to come over for the LA literature fair one year and maybe a Monterey historic meet; just can't manage the time away from bus. and home :( ...

Jim, all in good fun, great have another Gator, I think I'll dig out one of my old Porpoise cups out for my Happy Hour

lisa_spyder 02-24-2007 02:22 PM

Jim,

The M/schmidt is one of those really cute headturner cars...everyone is captivated!

Porsche Factory have sent another 6 museum cars out here for a few months to "do the rounds". They were all at the 356 Parade last year and will be at Phillip Island Historics is a couple of weeks...get ready for lots of pics posted from Mike and I from that weekend!

One from last year...our deliciously gorgeous Charlotte has impeccable taste in cars...

One of the "special cars" that hails from your side of the world - can you guess what it is?

Looks like your daughter might want a track car of her own sometime soon. ;)

Ahhh..there is ONE reason I wish I was older (and ONLY one, LOL)....so I could have been there to experience the "golden age" of F1.

Great shot!

lisa_spyder 02-24-2007 02:48 PM

Me too Jake!

MAN YOU SHOULD OF HEARD THAT THING!!!!!! Honestly, last year's meet was so full of amazing machinery that my eyes were popping...counting down the days...

Jim, Charlotte is a speed-demon through and through. She would often ride shotgun for me on spirited runs (Mummy does not drive past 7/10ths with little cargo I promise). She loves speedboats etc - anything that goes fast...she is a little me (yippeee!!!!).

She found a car just her size last year: very sweet little Norton powered Manx...couldn't get her out of it :D!

Nah...I know what I'm in for...one step ahead...it's Mike who will be in trouble. Mum laughs as she calls Charlotte "little Lisa" and in the same breath - "poor Mike"... she will single-handedly keep him in his toes, but I do that anyway :D !

lisa_spyder 02-24-2007 02:56 PM

Byron - great pics!!!

Hey we should start a thread for all this historic stuff...watcha think?!
