Dead animal in house - now what?

I have a dead animal in my basement somewhere. I'm willing to bet it is a squirrel. Anyway, now what do I do? I can smell it, but I can't find it. Do I start ripping down walls and the ceiling in the partially finished basement? What a PITA!

Thanks.

Looks like a good place for a stick-up. (sorry) Just wait for the buzzards to start circling, they will find it for ya. (sorry again) I have no idea how to find a dead critter without just following the nose.

Good thinking, and dog poop is easy to find so that smell can be handled.
Man I don't know why but I can't help myself with this thread.
I have 4 cats, so I don't have to worry about things like this. I hope you can find the offending critter.............that smell sucks.

If you can put up with the smell for a while, just leave it. The smell will be mostly gone in a month and completely gone in two.

If unable to locate the source, what if you sealed the basement as good as possible and run a de-humidifier (a week or so?) mummifying the thing. 24 hours with an ozone machine should take care of any residual odor.

Dog. Cheap, quick, economical & reliable. That dead critter will be flushed out like a pyjama wearin' commo Charlie in a fox hole in no time.

Not "man's best freind" for nothing.

I would call a pest control company and see if they have any good ideas how to find it.

If your furnace is in the basement, check inside there. Had a squirrel in mine once. Nasty!

just leave it. The smell will go away after a while. It's probably in your walls of attic. It will mummifie shortly. Leave a fan on. Stinky but the easiest way of dealing with it.

Don't most dogs (with the exception of trained cadaver dogs) AVOID dead things?

Victor is correct. The nose at the end of one of these will solve your problem. Clinton

None that I've ever known... dogs LOVE dead things.

Know anyone with a beagle? We have 2; their noses are incredible... there's a reason they use beagles in airport security.$20 says a beagle would find it in under 10 minutes.

As for the smell going away after a while, that may be true with smaller critters. My mother in law had a bad smell in her house for ages, never faded. She had a pest control co. in and they found a full grown, and very dead, raccoon in the wall. Got in the soffit, around gap that had been left during an addition, and died there. Nice.

Dogs use dead things to mask their own odor when "hunting".

I did an electrical box replacement years ago and there was a whole family of little dead vole skeletons behind the main breakers. These little critters can get in, I swear, through pinholes!!

I bet it's a mouse. Those little things can really stink up an area when they're ripe!!

OK. Thanks for your wise-ass comments and semi-useful suggestions. Let it never be said that PParts OT Forum isn't entertaining! I let my wife read this thread and she is off laughing hysterically.

Anyway, there is no dog for me to borrow, I'm going to check the furnace, and I'll call an exterminator and see what he has to say.

Thanks guys!
