Hydrogen-operated boat - zero emission vessel - 2008

Consortium of Dutch companies developing fuel cell boat

Another article on the same effort:

Quote:
Recently Fuel Cell Boat b.v., a consortium of Dutch companies, came to an agreement to develop and build a hydrogen-operated boat. This hydrogen boat will be exploited in Amsterdam as a roundtrip boat. The great advantage of this hydrogen boat is its environment-friendly character. The boat is a so-called "zero emission vessel": absolutely no emission (such as CO2) of detrimental substances takes place.

The ‘green’ roundtrip boat has a capacity of 100 passengers and is expected to be completed later in 2007. In order to enable this, the consortium will also place a tank station that will supply the boat with hydrogen. The required hydrogen will be produced by means of electrolysis on the basis of electricity from wind energy. Today, small boat vessels operating on hydrogen already exist, but a commercially exploited hydrogen boat of this dimension is a world first.
How gosh darn green can you get?

LOL! I was thinking that. . . Hard to get much more "zero emissions" than sailing. Still a cool idea though.

Speaking of which: a kite/sail for cargo ships http://news.com.com/2300-11395_3-6140455.html
It'll be pretty efficient at least one leg of the trip.

kach, how 'bout a sail boat (big efficient sails) which would propel the boat AND generate (thru water prop) power for a fuel cell system. of course the sails would have that cool new solar mylar too-- there ya go, a configuration for you to make millions from.

Send me my 5%

How many people clicked the first link, the MAIN article?

Very first sentence:
http://www.ibinews.com/ibinews/newsdesk/20070121110317ibinews.html
Quote:
Pressure from operators of pleasure craft in an around the canals of Amsterdam and a desire on the part of the authorities there for any new craft that are licensed to be 'zero emissions' vessels will see a new generation of commercially operated fuel cell craft introduced into service early in 2008.
I'm not an expert on sailing craft, but don't they typically follow some kind of zig-zag path and have no brakes?

Just last week I posted a 48 knot foil sailboat, but really sailing in a canal with 100 people on board the top speed would be less than walking and dependent on the wind at that very instant. Not such a great idea.

Just a few thoughts, thanks for the laugh.

canals of Amsterdam

kach, if the wind is blowing hard enough to run wind generators, how hard will the boat be pushed sideways? . . or is this boat driving into the wind?
