What was he driving?

If it is the in-car track video where the car offs, then lands on its roof with the driver yelling "*****!", I believe it is a Subie.

I love it when this one reappears - one of my all time favorite.

He is SO early in that turn - and to think the car rolled half way up that hill - not an easy thing to do.
He is fortunate he didn't make it to the downhill turn or he would have been up the crick - literally. Or more likely on the inside wall.

Chin Motorsports using this video in its classroom instruction, it a classic "what not to do" situation.

In the class its pointed out how late he is reacting to his slide. Then a video of one of their driving instructors in a S2000 getting sideways is played and his hands are a blur as he reacts to and corrects the spin.

Maybe if the driver of the Subie wasn't so preoccupied with his witty narration....

It's like he's in disbelief his AWD WRX is allowing him to oversteer and then finally decides to put in some opposite lock just before it rolls over!

I've see the pro's do that all the time to pass on the inside.

How do they get away with it?

You would think it would be a straighter line in the turn the way he did it (turning so early).

I think a lot of the problem may have been using the 911 as a lead/guide for his own car, the character of each is very different.

Operative word being PRO
in a set up race car.

He wasn't following the line of the Porsche - that is why he went wrong.
If he had straightened it on that line he prob would have gone WAY off on the left at the kink at the top.

This being said, I'm certainly not the last word - but I know what I was told (repeatedly). Stay out wide on the turn in , hit the apex and wheels straight up hill.

When I did that that hill was a BLAST - even/esp with a SWB car , it really flings you up the hill.
For me Big bend and the left hander were much more of a challenge

I can see that, but I think he was still using the 911 in front of him as a reference for SPEED. The guy in the passenger seat said he was taking one of the earlier turns too fast, right?

The 911 and Subie need to slow down and speed up at such different rates/times/spots that it could be confusing for anyone but a pro.

I've never been out on the track myself, I don't think I would want any other cars around the first few times/laps.

Yes he was too focused on the Porsche.
I don't think it is bad to use the cars around you as a reference but you have to drive YOUR car get to know its limits and your limits and to remember IT IS NOT A RACE !

You are right, he was just talking to himself, maybe trying to teach us what not to do?:D

Just so you guys don't get too big a swelled Porsche head, that's a Legacy: 165hp non-turbo, family sedan, heavier and MUCH slower than a WRX.

But almost as good as a 911, apparently. :D

Pat's a pretty level-headed guy. At the time, he may not have had a ton of experience, but he's not an egomaniac.

He lifted. A Subaru will save you from many situations that are far beyond where you may think it's over, but not if you lift and just wiggle the steering wheel a bit.

It's very amusing to read the entire thread. He is insured by USAA and I would very surprised if he was covered on the claim. I have heard USAA will cancel insurance if they simply hear of the car being on the track. He never said what happened in the thread or at least I didn't see it. Quite a lot of speculation on the actual cause. The interesting thing to me is that he actually rolled the car into the hill going up the hill, never made it to the top. Subaru is most likely a little higher CG than a 911.
