Bonneville Speed week?
I've had the Bonneville itch for years. Then I watched The World's Fastest Indian this weekend, and I'm all riled up. I'd like to take a couple weeks off and go in '08; wifey's cool and says I'm allowed.
Anyone go to watch? Better yet, anyone go to run? Stories & pics, please!

Jeeze... one last bump and I'll go crawl into a corner!
I bet I'd get replies if I posted: "Anyone here spent the week at Burning Man wearing nothing but silver paint and a cowboy hat?" But no one is into salt flat racing or LSR? I have to admit I'm a bit surprised; I was sure there'd be some LSR junkies here. C'mon... Speed Week, Maxton, World of Speed... anyone? ![]() ![]() ![]()

Ok I have not been there (yet) but I'm studying rules etc in hopes of making an assault on one of the normally aspirated records.....

I think it would be great. But, it's not much of a spectator sport. Everyone is pretty much on their own. If you were with a team, that might help. The weirdest part of being at Bonneville is having to protect your skin from the sunburn coming up from the salt. Yes, the bottom of your chin can get really burned even with a broad hat on. Take a lot of sunscreen and very good dark glasses. Someday, I'll get there.

I am planing on going this year in the fall. I have a couple of friends that go every year and have been after me to go.
One lives in Tokyo and comes every year. Really looking forward to it. The other event I want to go to / be involved in is the Baja 1000 - different thread material. |

I hear it is really boring if you are not involved. Just really no way to make it very spectator friendly. I think it would be great to go and just see all of the cars, but even then you need to be there all day every week. The vast majority of cars an bikes are very near stock and not all that interesting. The classes are very, very narrowly defined, so a great number of very similar appearing cars and bikes run in different classes. You will see dozens of those for every really cool something or another.

I'm thinking about going to Speed Week in '08.
USFRA's World of Speed seems like a great even too, much more "accesible" than Speed Week. You can pretty much "run what ya brung" in the 130 or 150 MPH clubs, and ~$150 gets you 5 runs. Downide is a 1 mile run. I still think Speed Week is a Mecca, but it seems to require a lot more of its participants. 8pt cages, 10# halon fire bottles, pusher trucks. Much more of an event for those who are serious about breaking records. Milt and Jeff, I've spoken to people who have gone as spectators, and they say the same: go as crew. You see a lot more. Even tech inspections are supposed to be pretty cool. Anyone ever see the pics of the old 356 that some dude has been bringing to bonneville for decades? I've been scouring the innernet for it. I saw it in a magazine a few years ago.
