i dont understand SPAM....

why are the subject titles all effed up? for example, you would see. "i MiSS u, PLENTY some more".

are they trying to sneak past filters or something? or are they coming to us from Mars?

azasadny 02-20-2007 08:21 AM

Yep, trying to sneak past the email filters...

TerryH 02-20-2007 08:26 AM

yeah, the one I hate and see too often in my Yahoo mail is....

hey vhxtxcaweslbiuxisdsr,
OTC stock WXYZ is going to explode.. yadda yadda yadda..

Can't they simply filter out any email with words 20+ letters long in the subject line? Seems like it would be simple. No one I know has a vocabulary containing words over 6 letters. :)

vash 02-20-2007 08:30 AM

thanks. apparently, i got a decent hookup for some "vIA-grA"

Same here. Apparently they also think I need a penis enlargement. Have they been talking to my wife? :D

Nostril Cheese 02-20-2007 08:46 AM

I regularly get spam emails for products claiming to increase the volume of my ejaculate by 400%. Apparently this is a problem for most men..

LMAO

fastpat 02-20-2007 09:03 AM

The latest batch thinks I want to buy hundreds of imitation Rolex watches. My spam filter catches about 98% of them.

Moneyguy1 02-20-2007 09:09 AM

I LOVE the spam that tells me that I have cheated someone on E-Bay, my PayPal account is in arrears, My membership is being suspended. I feel terrible for all those I have somehow taken advantage of. I am a real scoundrel. The problem, of course, is I have no PayPal account and have never registered with e-bay and probably never will.

And like Pat says, my spam filter dumps nearly all of these into a nice little file that takes one click to delete. Saves keystrokes!!!

wludavid 02-20-2007 09:19 AM

What depresses me is the fact that spam must be a successful marketing tool, because it keeps on coming.

Apparently, there are people smart enough to use a computer, but dumb enough to buy v1a-gr4 through an offer via email.

cashflyer 02-20-2007 09:28 AM

I'll be buying my vIA-grA at retail prices, without a care in the world, once I help Prince Montabwe get his wrongfully seized diamonds from Africa.

Actually do we (men) really need a 400% increase?

OK......................enough of volume increase.............. what about the viscosity rating ?? Anyone addressing that?

Does that change as well? :D

Took me a month to figure out how to get rid of this one. Now they are no more!

From the "joke" thread:
"With all the spam we get for penis-enlargement pills, you'd think by now someone would have invented a pill that would shrink vaginas instead."

IROC 02-20-2007 12:38 PM

I read the other day that spam has gotten so bad that - on average - people receive 14 spam emails to every 1 legitimate one...

I suspect that my average is much, much worse than that. I think I probably get at least 100-125 spam emails per day and only the occasional valid email. I've had the same email for years now.

I get lots of phishing emails from various banks that I've never done business with, but my favorite email from a bank is from the "fifth third bank".

I'm not sure I get this either. I'm betting it's a bunch of 16 year olds that think they need to be painting with the stuff.

As long as fire isn't shooting out the end of my gun, I'm not sure I care, hollow points, bird shot, wad cutters, blanks, whatever. As long as I'm shooting it's all good.

Nostril Cheese 02-20-2007 03:10 PM

"so what seems to be the problem?"

"uh, flame be shootin out of my d**k"

"so let me get this straight, it's a burning sensation?"

Fifth Third is a real bank -- they bought out Old Kent, the bank that my parents used in MI. Why, oh why would you ever trust your money to a bank that sounds like it didn't do so well in math?

I love the spam filter avoiding emails that come with random words in the message subject. Sometimes, maybe after a cocktail, they seem almost poetic: "Washing Monkey Toilet" or "Turning Lecturn Really"

Sorta trippy...

Yeah, but what am I going to do with this four foot hardon?

rick-l 02-20-2007 09:32 PM

Does anyone know how Yahoo spam filter works? I have had this e-mail addr (rocketmail) for at least 14 years and I wanted to see how much spam I get per month. It seems to have stopped at 12,815

Sounds like a new PPOT game to me. Here is a selection from my spambox. Each line is an actual subject line from a message:

be it meteoritic
a yoke from thy high places of them
to bante
u combat

I or triumphal
In or manipulable
to panama
his grandpa so nuptual

It's a masterpiece. I call it, "Fighting a Horny Old Man."

fastpat 02-21-2007 07:20 AM

This morning in the spam box:
1. As troy is seismograph
2. Which propagandist no basketball
3. was twombly on ferment
4. Not by expiable
5. A at wage

And of course several dozen offers such as:
1. Victoria's Secret $1000 Gift Card Confirmation #LWDGSD098
2. Meet HOT local Latinos in your area for FREE ...

Jandrews 02-22-2007 05:49 PM

Here's a dumb question...what is the purpose of spam? Is it all about marketing? It seems that some of it doesn't even contain a marketing message. If it is marketing, are legitimate companies actually sending this crap? Just curious about why and who actually sends spam.

JA

cashflyer 02-23-2007 05:14 AM

It's about large number marketing theory.

It is estimated that there are over 1 billion internet users worldwide, of which North America makes up over 200 million.

Any good mailing list will have a range of a few thousand to hundreds of thousands of addresses.

Let's say that you send out 100,000 spams with a product that profits you by $10. It costs about 4cents per email if you use a service, or less if you have the software to do it in house. So at 4c, you spend $4k to send these emails.

Let's say you get only 1 sucker to reply for every hundred emails sent (1% response). Let's narrow it down and say out of those 1000 respondants, only half buy your product.

You spent $4k on email advertising, and profited $10*500 buyers - which equates to a $1000 profit.

If you had purchased your own software, your profit is even higher since you would only pay a license fee of ~$0.001 per email.

"Farmer spunks on grandmother"
