Why they hate us, part 17

http://www.thememriblog.org/image/382.JPG

<< "Hillary" and "Obama" – A Woman and a Negro are Participating in the Campaign for the American Presidency >>

Religious man says "This is another sign of the collapse of the Western civilization"

from Al-Ahram, Egypt

dd74 02-21-2007 05:19 PM

Hmmm...I'm trying to figure out at what I should laugh (sardonically):
1) Use of the word "Negro."
2) The misspelling of Hillary.
3) The really poor caricature of...what...is that supposed to be, a conservative Israeli Jew?

** I'd stick to posting Peanuts and Charlie Brown. There's less chance of confusing issues with stereotypes.

Jim Richards 02-21-2007 05:23 PM

I'm sure it made perfect sense to him when he found the cartoon. ;)

Rrriiight, didn't the ROW get the memo? -"African Americans."

:D

.. that is, I'll bet that Arabic translates more closely to "Negro" than to "African American." ;)

1) as somebody says, "African-American" hasn't made it to Egypt yet
2) that is funny
3) not a Jew. A Sunni religious man.

Al-Ahram is the second oldest daily newspaper in the Arab world.

sammyg2 02-21-2007 05:32 PM

Lesse, a bunch of animalistic unsocialized sub-human monsters who kill because they like killing hate me, even though they (muslim extremists) use any excuse they can to justify their actions including a religion that basically says what they do it wrong.

They do not need a cartoon. they do not need a war. All they need is an excuse and that can be in any form.
They are brainwashed murderers who cannot be stopped, they can only be eliminated.
Elimination can be in the form of attitude modification or conventional means. Realistically I don't think either are possible. They will keep growing in numbers and in extreme actions, until they provoke the ultimate end. For all of us.

Hard to say. Maybe Rearden is quoting "Negro" directly from the comic. If that's the case, my hat's off to Rearden for his ability at Arabic-to-English translation. :p

So you translated it yourself?

No, I didn't. It was translated at MEMRI.

The cartoon is a dig on both. (as well as their respective "minority" status') Do you expext it translates to something PC?

. . or are you saying it should have been translated to PC?

Jim Richards 02-21-2007 05:45 PM

So, does it also say that "they hate us," as in the title of the thread? Or does it say that they dislike us? Or maybe that they want to throw their support behind one of the neocon candidates, but that they don't have any pictures of them for their cartoonist? And why do they want to vote for a Dem candidate in the US anyway?

dd74 02-21-2007 05:45 PM

Neither, really. I wanted to know how it was translated. When the term "sand monkeys" comes up, I'm sure things will be much clearer.

Rearden 02-21-2007 05:49 PM

They hate us for our liberalism*, if that's actually not clear to you. Next time, I'll add commentary. I thought it was clear as a stand-alone cartoon.

*as in liberty, not as political leaning.

stomachmonkey 02-21-2007 05:50 PM

They hate us because we would consider a woman or black man as the leader of our country?

Jim, have a look. Arabic reads right to left. Note the << and the "" marks in the cartoon.

dd, I wouldn't be surprised if "woman" is a more PC translation. -d/k

Bingo.

Jim Richards 02-21-2007 05:53 PM

But aren't their a lot of black muslims in Africa, even in positions of authority? Are you sure they hate Obama? We know everyone hates Hillary...all the neocons say so.

Nah! Not this one. But whatever. Scots like eating out of a sheep's stomach, and the French think Jerry Lewis is a comic genius. What can you do?

Yes, no, no, perhaps.

Jim Richards 02-21-2007 06:02 PM

Ahh, thanks for clearing it all up for me. :)

So, why do you think they put a Yarmulke on the man?

Jim Richards 02-21-2007 06:15 PM

So, maybe this cartoon is an Egyptian newspaper's translation of a Jewish man commenting on the Dem presidential candidates in the US. The Jewish man might even be in the US, or he might be in the Middle East. Hmmm...

That's what it looks like to me, do you think it's a sly reference to the Jewish/Black race riots a few years ago in New York City?

No need for conspiracy theories, Pat. The man is wearing a kufi.

Jim Richards 02-21-2007 06:24 PM

Hmmm, Jewish, Black, and isn't Hillary now a New Yorker? Hmmm.

I wonder if they also do cartoons about Brittany Spears and Anna Nichole Smith?

Yes, she's one now. The man's face is a classic characiture of a jewish man, like the one's the National Socialists used to print.

I think we can write this one off as propaganda, and a very poor attempt at that.

Wait, you don't think Rearden would stoop to this, do you?

Jim Richards 02-21-2007 06:30 PM

But someone must hate us, right? If not the Jewish guy in the cartoon, then who?

Rearden 02-21-2007 06:36 PM

Well that's a relief. I was thinking that the second largest daily in the Arab world published a cartoon criticizing the audacity of the Americans to consider a woman or "Negro" as President. But it turns out it's just a Jew. That makes more sense.

Jim Richards 02-21-2007 06:38 PM

Is he actually criticizing? Maybe the Egyptian translation of the Jewish guys words is garbled. Maybe he's wondering who moved the pic of Ron Paul?

Or John McCain, the hero of Vietnam.

Jim Richards 02-21-2007 06:46 PM

Now that makes sense. He's probably a contributor.

Jim Richards 02-21-2007 06:50 PM

OK, so, once again...who hates us?

You think, huh? Very interesting display of how you pass off things that are uncomfortable -- challenging your world view -- as "propaganda". And now I am in one of your conspiracy theories! How fun.

I don't think he knows, based on his statements he thinks this is about him.

Bizarre.

ah yep.

The knee jerk reactions of some . . . benefit of the doubt goes to anybody but . . .

nostatic 02-21-2007 07:43 PM

wow, the lack of understanding of predominant mindsets in the ME is....um...not very surprising.

island911 02-21-2007 08:45 PM

Speaking of lack of understanding . . what are you trying to say?

Chuck Moreland 02-21-2007 08:59 PM

The cartoon can be interpreted many ways.

I think it is ridicule. Ridiculing Americans for allowing these candidates. Does that translate to hate?

wrcRS 02-21-2007 10:35 PM

I think it should show that Arab dominated countries are NOT ready for this wonderful democracy that America has embraced.

HINT HINT GWB

fintstone 02-21-2007 10:43 PM

I think that the cartoon merely illustrates that it is pretty funny in any language that anyone would actually consider either of the two democratic frontrunners as serious candidates for anything...much less leader of the United States.
