Holy pharking shee-it!!!!! If I had kids I would be VERY tempted to shoot that guy.

Would a big dose of pepper spray keep it from coming back?

I agree. That is far too brazen for my level of comfort. It is not natural for a cougar to be climbing on decks and looking in windows. He is at a level of confidence and desperation that I would be VERY concerned about. Not sure what to do about it, but I would try the pepper spray or pellet gun to remind him of who is the superior species.

Urine is your friend.

Don't kill him without talking to the local Department of Natural Resources and university biologists. It would be a shame to lose a guy like that if there is an alternative. Of course, that being said, don't take any risks.

And potentially wake up to a dead mastiff?

This was not at my house but at a home in Martin S.D. We have these here though too. One ran through my neighbors yard, after jumping cleanly over a 6 foot wall in the front and then out the back over a 6 foot chainlink fence. It is common in this area for people to have livestock and pets get eaten by these. The police had to shoot one in downtown San Luis Obispo last month. There are many deer around here in the city limits that help to draw them in for feeding.

DD74, you obviously don't know much about mastiffs.
Unless that cat had a gun he would be a good, solid meal for an old english mastiff. They excell at keeping wolves, coyotes, and big cats far away. Many bears won't even mess with a fully grown male mastiff.

It's not a matter of knowing or not knowing mastiffs. It's a matter of whether an owner wants to subject their dog to fighting a wild cat.

Where nature meets civility, possums have ripped the bowels out of dogs four times their size. Raccoons have torn muzzles off Labs, and cougars in and around So. Cal., are known to lie in wait, attack joggers and cyclists, and drag them off to the bushes to eat them.

Bear that in mind...

I have a solution...

Hoyt PowerTec at 62# and 28" draw. Carbon eXpress 200s with 100gr Thunder Head XP broadheads and offset Quick Spins.

One day I'll bag a big cat with my bow...

Call DNR. They'll know what to do.

My friend's neighbor in Florida just shot an alligator with a bow because it likes to hang out at the dock and watch his 6 year old son play. Guy noticed it one day while out, and saw it keep coming back, day after day while his kid was out there. One day he grabbed the bow, and zipped an arrow through it's skull.

The only proper, responsible answer to an animal such as this is to kill it. I would have shot it instead of taking that fourth photograph. Right through the door; doors are replacable. Kids are not. It has clearly lost all fear or respect for man; it WILL hurt some one if not dealt with at the earliest opportunity. Magnificent animal or not; it is a very capable predator. It is, for some reason, looking for an easier meal than it is normally accustomed to obtaining. It will, with absolutely no doubt whatsoever, continue looking until it is successful.

In Washington State a few years back they outlawed cougar hunting. In recent years cougar populations have exploded to a point where young juvenile males are being pushed into urban populations. This is not an animal to play with, they see us as food. Young cougars such as the one in the picture are a definite threat. The only way to deal with an animal like this is is to kill it.
