Awesome ride. Does it have good brakes?

cnielsen 03-01-2007 05:59 AM

I have a fully loaded dodge ram with the cummins diesel. It is 4wd, long bed and extended cab. You would think the dodge would be much more stable than the MOG... I know it sounds rediculous but I think the MOG is more stable. This thing corners on a dime and is very stable going down the freeway...meanwhile you are not going to get any speeding tickets, but it is not like you are holding up traffic...55mph and that is about it.

cnielsen 03-01-2007 06:03 AM

Oh yeah, brakes on this thing are truly amazing. I really think if I dared hit the pedal hard enough, I might be able to lift a rear wheel! I want these brakes on my 911's!!!

I guess they would have to be good. I have seen UNIMOG 416's, like mine, pulling a 747 airplane or a length of railroad box cars. The video I saw, had them pulling probably about 8-10 RR box cars! How much do those things weigh???

CarreraDan 03-01-2007 06:21 AM

Damn, that is just too neat. I wish I had the money and lived closer to check this thing out. I think I have found an off roader that the g/f might like (she loves old Mercedes). So how tall is it? What diesel motor do they have, feel free to share some more pictures. I actually enjoyed working on the 5 cylinder that her 300TD had--mainly sits in the garage now and doesn't get driven much at all. It is kinda sad it only has 120k mile on it and is in mint condition--I am saving it for a later project.

Any interior pics? Does it have backseats?

JavaBrewer 03-01-2007 07:58 AM

Probably the coolest "for sale" ever posted on this BBS. Wish I had the $$ to send your way. That thing is incredible!

Overpaid Slacker 03-01-2007 08:04 AM

Is the camper box included in the sale?

Intrigued...

JP

cnielsen 03-01-2007 08:29 AM

The camper box is included. If the buyer did not want it, I would be more flexible on price since I could use it on my next UNIMOG.

There are two seats in the front and one Land Rover Defender jump seat in the rear. There would be room for another one but that way I have room for my dog.

I will get some interior pics today if I get a break at work.

bigchillcar 03-01-2007 08:57 AM

can't buy it, but would love to see interior pics though..intriguing. i love my toyota 4x4 with 3' body lift and 33x12.5 bfg's...but this thing makes it look like..well, a 'toy'! ;)

This was thrown out of "Cars for Sale," IIRC.
At any rate, it's a great vehicle, and a nice break from political talk...or even Porsche talk.

dd74 03-01-2007 09:05 AM

Hmm...looks like the penchant to post non-Porsches in "(Porsche) Cars For Sale" is catching:

cnielsen 03-01-2007 09:38 AM

Well is it OK that this is in Off Topic???

The UNIMOG has the same 100mm gas cap as my 911ST and the same hazard switch as my '73 911 Targa...

Seems more relevant to car talk than religion, politics or bikinis... Not that there is anything wrong with that... :)

I honestly don't understand why people, upon seeing a forum that is titled "Porsches for Sale," and that contains 100 percent Porsches for sale, say to themselves, "I'm going to post my Mercedes."

Maybe it's the German connection...:D

bigchillcar 03-02-2007 10:01 AM

bandwidth permitting, perhaps they'll create a 'general cars for sale' section, but we've already got cars.com, ebay, autotrader et al that reach a lot of folks. i've bought my last two vehicles off of cars.com and autrotrader.com.

Craig 930 RS 03-02-2007 10:38 AM

So what is the most expensive part of owning that Uni?

Why ya selling? (for your "Next Unimog")

Your insurance costs per year?

rouxroux 03-02-2007 10:41 AM

Jeez, Mogs have always been my favorite...Wish I had one. I have a 3/4 ton Dodge conversion van for sale but nothing as cool as a Unimog though!

Craig 930 RS 03-02-2007 10:43 AM

Chris -

You probably know of the red Uni in Kirkland - about 2 blocks from my house......

Jims5543 03-02-2007 11:39 AM

Showed my wife these pictures last night and she loved it!!

Hmmmmm.......

Never mind. :(

cnielsen 03-02-2007 02:39 PM

I had the day off so I took some pictures of the Unimog and posted them to Photobucket... my first time so I hope it works. Plus, the moderators can't get after me for wasting too much bandwidth.

As for the most expensive part of Mog ownership... there really aren't any. How much is diesel now? This has been a completely reliable vehicle for me. I have changed the fluids and adjusted the valves. Both are easy for a DIYer. Tires are spendy but mine are almost new and show no signs of wear.

Insurance is through Hagerty on the same policy as my Porsches. Cheap to insure, not sure of the exact amount.

As measured this morning... Height is nearly 9 feet and bed height of the truck bed is nearly 4' 6". There is a great technique for loading quads in these things... Find some deep soft sand or mud, put in 2wd, floor it and let the rear tires bury themselves. This will lower the bed to a very manageable level. Once you are done loading or unloading, put it in locked 4wd and crawl out of your hole! I have pics of this being done by another mog owner!

I don't think I mentioned but just so I justify this with more Porsche content... IT DOES HAVE MFI!!!

GREAT STORY... So this morning I take it to the drive through at Starbucks. The guy in front of my was rubber necking at the UNIMOG so much that he rear ended the lady in front of him. No damage but I was cracking up.

Interior shot...

Love it! Definitely a Ford Explorer killer. I work with a "Greenie" who I believe secretly hates my Porsche (she's also borderline Socialist). Man, I'd love to pull up in this thing and park beside her Prius. :D
