Does the military sell old vehicles?

The Burbank-area National Guard is stationed behind the office complex I work in. Often I see them moving around the military vehicles, many of which are Hummers. Sometimes I think it'd be cool to pick up one of those Hummers. They're pretty nice stripped out as they are and in olive drab.

So just for the sake of argument, does the military sell its old vehicles - Hummers in particular - to the general public? I've heard of the LAPD and CHP selling their old cruisers, which, incidentally, are supposed to be quite built up.

Any ideas?

No. You can find the website yourself, but I found that military spec HMMWVs are not for sale to the public. You have to get the yellow one with the LCD TVs like everyone else.

Here is what I found:

Military vehicles purchased by Government auctions are subject to a "de-mil" requirement (referring to demilitarization). This means that you have to remove certain parts (such as weapons, communications gear) or, in the case of M151 jeeps or HMMWVs, you have to destroy the vehicle. That's right, you have to totally crush and destroy a perfectly good vehicle before the resulting scrap pile can be removed from Government property.

and

Here is what the US Government has to say about surplus jeeps on a DRMS website:

"DoD does not sell the M-151 series of vehicles commonly referred to as jeeps. The Department of Transportation has ruled that jeeps are built for off road use and could be unsafe at high speed. Therefore, for public safety, we render them inoperable prior to sale (i.e., cut or crush the unitized body and suspension system). All M151 series vehicles, including jeeps, are unsafe for public highway use. These vehicles are made unusable by removing major components and destroying the unitized body so it cannot be rebuilt. False stories often advise that jeeps are available for unusually low prices. Such stories should be brought to the attention of the DRMS Public Affairs Office, ATTN: DRMS-DB, 74 N. Washington St., Federal Center, Battle Creek, MI 49017-3092."

the flow for actual mil type vehicle is they are usually sold to states/city/ munis and they end up selling to public. There are bout a dozen here in Dallas purchased this way.

One of the 914 Pelicans drives a real Hummer, an oldie. I assumed it was before they ever made any for he public. So I would think there are some vehicles for sale now and then. They used to sell military vehicles all the time. How did all those Dodge Power Wagons get out into the public? Maybe they were ultility company trucks.

I've seen ex-military Hummers on Ebay. And you can buy the old Chevy 1 1/4 ton blazers/pickups. When I worked for the USFS we had both- specially built by Chevy for $70k each! Tough, stripped down, beefed up in every way including a 24v syatem. There was a guy in town that had an ex-mil blazer, all jacked up with ridiculous tires on it. Haven't seen it in a while.

I checked a few more sites and all pretty much said that military Hummers needed to be returned to AMG or destroyed. There were reports that people have reconstructed some. DOT states that military vehicles are not approved for public roads. Anyway, just relating what I read.

You can get the de-milled hummers at the Knob Creek shoot in Kentucky. Google is your friend. The ones I've seen for sale were really beat to hell and were expensive, IMO.

So those convoys I see on the interstate comprised of mainly Hummers is VERY unsafe for me to be near? Interesting...

Now that I think about it they travel at 50MPH in those convoys so it makes sense, possibly they are difficult to drive at speeds above 50MPH and the government knows your typical consumer will try to drive it at 80MPH.

Somewhat BS. The military does sell HMMWVs. All you have to do is get on the approved bidders list. (which is sort of like saying, all you have to do is lick your own balls - easier said than done)

Anyway, there is a company about a block from mine that buys military vehicles and makes them civilian friendly.

Our convoy speeds are 45mph. We do it b/c we have to drive to the speed of the slowest vehicle in the convoy, which for us is the 2 1/2 ton truck. I have driven a HMMWV on the highway many times, and I would not want to drive one at 80. In fact, I am not sure it's possible due to the gearing. If you did get it up that fast, it would be screaming. HMMWVs are not good highway vehicles at all.

HMMWVs suck anyway. You don't want one. They aren't good for anything but crossing extreme terrain. And for that you're better off with a Wrangler or a Land Cruiser.

Hmmm...sometimes crossing L.A. could be referred to as "extreme terrain."

Anyway, thanks for the information and advice, guys.
