Wife Going in for a Hysterectomy in a few Days...
My Wife has to get a Hysterectomy - goes under the knife in a few days. I understand it to be a pretty common (if not over presrcibed) procedure. She has some stuff on both of the ovaries as well as her uterus.
Must be genetic cuz her Mom and Sis have had them. I feel bad for her cuz I know she will be in physical pain but also she will be sad as well. Not that we would have more kids but the thought...the finality of it is what is going to get to her (not to mention if they pull out both ovaries - hello menopause. Could use a few prayers...

Mike,
We'll keep her (and your family) in our prayers. Going up and down stairs will be touchy, so I hope she can avoid that. Praying all goes well, keep us posted!

You got it, Mike.
It is no relief now, but for many women life quality is paradoxically higher after such procedure.

Markus,
Thanks. I had a question and I didn't think of it when talking to the doc, but they are going to take out the cervix as well. If that is the case then will there be a sizable gap up there or will they stitch it all up? (not to be crude or crass)

Mike,
Best of luck to you both. I have now lived with two women that have had hysterectomies (sic?) and in both cases it (obviously) eliminated the pain they were suffering but in both cases, drastically changed their sex drive. I hope you have better luck. My ex wife had hers young in her mid 30's. My girlfriend in her late 40's. In my ex's case hormone replacement therapy was given but she eventually discontinued it; said it made her feel weird. In my girlfriend's case it was not given. As I understand it, HRT is not done as commonly as it once was. I also understand that in removing the ovaries they lose their source of esotrogen but also they lose testosterone which they have in minute amounts and which provides their libido to a great degree. I may be all wet on all of this, I just know "things" changed, and not for the better for the man. Again, best of luck.

Mike,
I do not mean to add fuel to the fire, but you must be very careful in this proceedure. A sloppy surgeon will cut the nerves to the fun parts, and sex will no longer be fun for her. and to Dans point, two words: Personal Lubricant but then, you are already the lubemaster

red-beard, You're right of course..."personal lubricant" will get the job done...assuming she still has a drive.
In my case(s), the drive was sharply diminished. I've never heard of nerves being cut which effect the drive. Not saying it isn't possible, but I think the drive mostly comes from the mind and the endocrine system. livi can chime is here! In my girlfriend's case, the cervix and one ovary were not taken....but it didn't matter. The ovary ultimately shut down fairly fast afterward and did not act to preserve "drive" anyway. In my ex's case, her strong drive from before only existed in her mind afterward but less and less until largely an afterthought by age 42, yikes!

Wifey had her surgery today - all went well. They kept the ovaries in which is a good thing, uterus and cervix are going to the pathology lab then to the dog food factory (not really, prolly to some land fill in Arkansas).

Mike,
I missed your post last week. Glad to read she came through the procedure well. As you mentioned, her life has just gone through a major change. There will (hopefully) be two healing processes going on; both physical and mental. Best wishes and strength to both of you. Les

Mike;
Also missed the surgery post last week. It's not all doom and gloom. Mine had the exact opposite after effect. Am having trouble keeping up (pardon the pun). Recovery slow for the first few weeks, but then, one morning she'll tell you, that even with the scar / phantom pains, she feels better than she has for years, and why did I wait so long to do this? Then look out. |

Think about chronic pain and anemia. It just wears a person down physically and emotionally. After 6-12 weeks she'll feel better than ever.

I'm wondering if the panic attacks have gone away...many times we know something is wrong before it becomes apparent, and it comes out in different ways...such as panic attacks
On at least 3 occasions in my life I have had the feeling something was very wrong, I could never shake the feeling nor come up with a reason for those feelings. Only when events caught up with those feeling did it make any sense. On 2 of the occasions the illness was terminal and the third the indivdual is very ill. I will relate the 3rd...Last April I started having some pain in the abdomen, nothing really specific...so after a few weeks I went into the MD. He checked the Prostrate...best thrill I've had in a long time I'll tell ya...and he scheduled a Colonscopy which I had in September, it came back OK.. In June I called a Cousin to wish him Happy B day and sent him a box of cigars...in November I was talking to his daughter, when she told me her Dad had a ruptured colon a week after I talked to him, had surgery, still wasn't doing well and was going to the Mayo Clinic for more tests... They found Auto Immune diease. So it finally made sense to me why I was feeling the way I did.
