So what are the good comedies?

The thread on the Geico Caveman sitcom got me to thinking. I watch the Disney Channel and Nick with my kids, and they seem to have the best shows on TV. I like "Phil of the Future", "Suite Life of Zack and Cody", and "Drake and Josh".

The sitcoms on the 'grown-up' stations are just plain stupid and, oddly enough, more juvenile. How do you explain that the kid's shows are better for adults than the drivel that's meant for adults? Or am I just an immature dolt who doesn't recognize genius when I see it?

Thumbs up

If I had kid, I would have DVDs of all the classic shows, most are so much better than the crap they are flushing out right now. From the 50s -80, you could get some good shows, and not worry about the content.

Our 2.5 yr old watches the morning Disney lineup (Wiggles, etc) but in the evening we switch to Sprout (Little Bear, etc). Oh he also LOVES Monster Jam. Absolutely adores it.

I strongly dislike the 'anime' inspired crap that todays teenyboppers seem so fond of. My boy will NEVER fall deep into that *****.

While he's not watching grown up, or even teen shows yet I have always felt the Disney stuff on in the afternoon is absolutely horrible. I'd go so far as to call it Bob Saggetish.

For adults i don't know if you can beat The Office for juvenile fun. Raymond does a good job and Seinfeld is always good for a chuckle. That 70's Show is one of the best sit-coms in the past decade IMO though i wouldn't allow younger kids to get much of it (too much pot humor).

What i really miss, and what i'd be happy to let my son watch (once he's a bit older of course) is Third Rock. Would love to see Get Smart and Gilligans Island reruns get top billing on weeknights as well when the boy is a bit older. Good stuff!

I watch "The Office" with my wife and 14 year old. No laugh track, heavy sarcasm, generally cleverly written. Not everybodies cup of tea, but my mature daughter loves it. This is the only non HBO show that I tape. Other then that, I have absolutely no idea what is on. As far as the kids programs, my 10 and 7 year old do like the Nick shows on in the evenings. I can take about 30 minutes of them max.

Corner Gas.

On the surface a light fluffy show, but underlying very clever, sometimes Phythonesque (spell!)writing. Bang-on accurate characters. Perfectly cast.

On TV now? THE OFFICE is the only sitcom I find remotely funny...

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT might have been the funniest show on TV ever. It was remarkably clever.

After you watch the whole series go back and watch them again, lots of little things are hinted at early in the show, and there were a lot of little things i missed that are hilarious.

I used to like Home Improvement when I was younger also.

And classic 90s nickelodeon, Doug, Rug rats, Hey Arnold, not this crap they have on today that they call TV.

The Office and 30Rock are my favorites, but I'm a big MST3K fan, so what do I know?

Yes, but Cobert and DAILY SHOW aren't exactly sitcoms. I actually like a lot of Comedy Central's shows, and the early [adult swim] stuff (Space Ghost, Aqua Teen, Sealab 2021).

i always liked barney miller and taxi.
i don't know if you can get kids to watch anything in black and white, if they are willing though you might try dvds of laurel and hardy, chaplin, wc fields, marx bros. even the mayhem of the three stooges seems preferable to most of the swill passing for comedy on tv today. as long as der kinder don't poke each others eyes out.

Thanks for the MST3K clip, that was great! I've been getting all of the MST3K movies from Netflix and I've seen almost every one of them.
