R Gruppe membership

R Gruppe Membership:

"Currently the club isn't seeking new members, but if you'd like to be considered for membership please send an email to the club founder; Cris Huergas with your name, contact information, a description of your car, and a few photos."

I don't mean to be picky but doesn't this sound a little exclusive/elitist. I'm assuming that membership is limited to only those who own a particular year of car w/ certain qualities/characteristics. So membership is very expensive if car ownership is a prerequisite.

I have always liked the early (pre 74 cars) and being curious went to the R Gruppe website to look and was somewhat surprised to see the rather negative attitude toward general membership.

I really enjoy seeing these cars and appreciate the time and money others have invested to maintain these cars but I have to say that I'm also a little disappointed that having a serious interest w/o ownership eliminates me from consideration.

I did not contact Cris, although I did exchange emails with him a number of years ago (when I owned a 74 911). Since I just have an 84 Carrera, I guess I'll just have to shut up until I can buck up. $$

Life goes on.

(This is not meant to be a rant, guess I'm just thinking out loud on this snowy Monday morning.)

The various R Gruppe discussions on the PPBBS have been interesting.

They do not accept members who own, have owned, or are considering owning Black Audi Wagons...

Not again.

Just do what the No Gruppe Gruppe does. We meet every month on the second Saturday, even in the Winter. We plan drives. We meet each other casually. We work on each other's cars. We actually do more than most clubs, but we aren't official. It is all about the driving!

I am all for the R Gruppe. They want to keep the gruppe small, and I can't fault them for that. If you think that is just elitist, then you got your own hang-ups. I think they are generally misunderstood, and people who have a problem with it, just need to get a life of there own and stop hating just because they aren't part of something.

i like the retro cars. looove the concept of a hot rod. once i saw what's being done w/ those bad-ass cars, i lost a bit of respect. there's only so many canyon/starbucks runs you can do at 70% of the car's potential, especially when it *looks* like a vintage racer. and make sure you don't call your car 'rgroop car' when it actually isn't. they'll come down on you like the inquisition on a heretic.

Barney Fife wanted into the "Esquire Club" and was denied, you can't let everybody in.
Seriously, I can understand a club wanting to remain small but how do you do that without upsetting others...??

Obviously the goal. So give them some respect, damnit!

They are cooler than you will ever be . . . they are Members.

I really didn't mean to sound so bitter. I belong to some groups more exclusive than the R Gruppe (not asociated with Pcar). It just seemed a little exclusive and I was making the observation to see if others had similar opinions.

More power to them, they have nice cars and so do I. I agree with you completely on getting together on an informal basis, certainly seems like the neighborly thing to do.

i'll let it rest, sorry to upset everyones morning coffee.

So it's NOT "exclusive" or "elitist" . . n'no. .. It's a group, intentionally kept small, of those people owning modified early Porsche 911's . . w/ gatherings kept secret. --Rrriiiight.

Just because we know r-people who are not exclusive/elitist does not make the group non-exclusive/elitist, in their ambitions.

...tho' many of their actions do keep them from the elitists realm, the #limit and "submit pic's of your car" does drive the 'exclusive' aspect.

When the R Gruppe was founded, Early 911's were selling for less than a beat up SC. In fact, many (most?) of the current members owned their Early cars long before the R Gruppe was around - back in the days when nobody wanted longhoods. The club simply attracted a bunch of like-minded Porsche enthusiasts - those who were fanatical about Early 911s and that unique era (65-73) of Porsche motorsport. It has never had anything to do with how much the cars are worth.

Buying an Early 911 to become involved in R Gruppe would seem to be a strange reason to buy a car. Everyone I know would own their Early car regardless of membership in any club - it's a sickness, I'll admit that.

Here's what R Gruppe membership is all about:

Stairs!? WTH are U talking about?

U pushed 'em down the up-escalator, and they've reached equillibrium mid-flight.
