Just drove a 2002 Turbo 911.....wow. Just wow.
Despite my best arguments, the dealer refused to take my left jewel as partial payment.
The kicker is how civilized and easy to drive the thing it. Refined, compliant suspension. Clutch is almost too light. Just a nice well thought out GT car....until you unleash THE BEAST. Mashing the accelerator at 3,000 rpm on the freeway sets off an explosion in the back end. Turbo lag is basically undetectable. Nothing scary, just the smooth deliver of massive amounts of power. I MUST HAVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! muhahahaha! MuHaHaHaHaHa! MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...amingdevil.gif My lord, these cars are a sickness. I'm contemplating getting one too. A friend with a high end repair shop in town told me I would be getting a 996TT. He didn't tell me I'd want one, he told me I'd get one, that they are that nice. The only problem is I want to keep my 930 and right now I can't afford both :(
I could get a 996 now, if I could make room in the garage, but deep down, I know I'd be happier if I wait another year or two and get the 996TT. |
I can't ever bring myself to own a 996 of any kind. I lusted after a 993TT for a while. But since I've gotten my motorcycle, I get all the super speed bursts I need for about 1/10 the price of a 993TT. And I like my 993 C2 more than any other car in the world.

Different strokes for different folks, but I like them. I don't feel the need to compare it to ancient 911s for a "soul contest", it's a modern car. No modern car has the raw feel or same type of personality as its ancestors, whether it's German/Italian/British/domestic/whatever...
I rode in a 996 GT-2 a few years ago and my 3 impressions were that it was large, it was built like a bank vault, (a little surprised there), and it was fast in a way that makes older 911s seem like garbage trucks in comparison. And smooth, like a turbine. Why limit yourself to only one type of automotive experience? We are living in the ultimate age for a car nut; the basic invention is 100 years old and pretty much all iterations are now present+ fuel prices will soon remove the last enjoyment of the hobby. It cracks me up when young people talk about the car they want to own or buy in ~10 years here, are you kidding?? It's over, baby. Get out and burn that last few gallons. :cool: |
After driving a 996TT, I was planning to sell my 993, add 30K, and get the TT.
Then I started thinking hard about what it would be like to park a 60K car at work, Home Depot, and the kids' daycare lot. I'm going to keep the 993 and get a Mitsu EVO for the same money as one TT. Not quite as fast, but man, the EVO is a beast of a car for 30K. And four doors with two child seats in the back. Speeder's right - there are just so many great choices for fast cars these days. |
Ah yes -- the 996TT -- best handling car -- in a straight line.
I had the opportunity to drive a friend's TT at Pocono raceway for a DE session. Boy was it a pig in the corners. Lots of understeer. Granted, I was going 20-30 mph faster at the end of the straights than in my 944S2 without really pushing the car, but I prefer to play in the corners anyway... :D -Z |
That's funny, Hurley Haywood set a track record for production cars with a stock 996 tiptronic when they came out.

I have several cars, one of them (one I drive every other day or so) would certainly give a 996TT a decent run for the money, in any performance category.
But it weighs 2300 lbs, does not have a too light clutch, refined compliant suspension, would not be considered civilized by most, and is certainly not a "nice GT" car. But 2300 lbs and 350 hp ain't slow! |
c'mon the, Denis has been sore ever since selling his SC. For that (and his Liberal misgivings) we give him some slack to lash out. :D

LOL, just having some fun, Denis is a good guy in my book.
He's right, it takes all kinds, I can certainly see where MOST would like a 996 or a 996TT. I recognize that I'm the oddball in not having any remote desire to own either, no matter how fast Hurley Haywood can take it around a German racetrack. |
A friend once emailed, stating that if he was going to buy a water cooled car, he wanted it to be a make that was always water cooled. ;)
