This just in; Pete Rose bet on the Reds every night.

Pete Rose now says he bet for his team to win every time they played. He's banned because of concern that this could have led to fixing games. Right. Pete's going to bet to lose? Not hardly. Am I the only one who sees nothing wrong with what he did? He should have been fined and reprimanded. And then inducted.

He's a POS. He should be cleaning toilets somewhere, or whatever his education allows.

I agree that betting FOR your team to win (assuming you are not manipulating the score to meet a point spread) should be required for manager. It's kind of like stock options.

Charlie the problem is that he said he NEVER bet on Reds games. Even after MLB had the goods on him.

He had plenty of time to tell the truth but he just thumbed his nose at MLB.

Do you really think he didn't "adjust" his game-plan to suit his wagers? NOBODY bets that their team is going to win every game.

Didn't he techinally bet his salary and future employment on the outcome of the team's season? Doesn't every coach/manager?

You're right about all that, and he blew it there. But he said on ESPN radio that he actually did do the betting, so he's talking now. Does he need to go to the commissioner now with his tail between his legs? Maybe.

Actually, you're not right about who he bet on. I believe that he did always bet that they would win. As for me, I've never bet that the 49ers would lose. That wouldn't be right. Of course, I don't bet every time, especially that last few seasons.

I have seen him twice in Vegas at the forum shops--most recently during SB weekend. He makes a tidy living on the autograph circuit, you buy an item from his table--baseball, photo, etc. and he autographs it--cheapest item was 50.00--for another twenty you can get your photo with him.....

Whats more likely? A degenerate gambler bets on himslef to win even though its not a sure thing or .....

bet against his team and make them lose which guarantees he gets paid.

I know plenty of gamblers and all would take the latter.

He knew the rules.
He broke the rules.
He lied about breaking the rules.

He is no role model that belongs in the HOF.

I grew up with the big red machine. Loved them. Saw Hank Aaron tie the record in Cincy (while not taking steroids). So, I'm a huge fan.

That being said, Paul is correct. He knew the rules. He broke the rules. He was one of the greatest players. But, he cheated the game.

Does he belong in the hall, yes. Should he be admitted to the hall; once he's dead. Had he come out and admitted it at the time and took his lumps, then he would probably be in by now. But, his arrogance is not what baseball is about (or at least my perception of what baseball once was).

If you let him in, you have to let Barry Bonds in. There's another can of worms.

Michael
