Thank you OT moderators.

I was recently reading a thread where the moderator was accused of de facto censorship for banning a controversial poster. That is not fair.

Point and counter point does not mean all's fair.
In a community where participation is voluntary there should be a level a of civility, not censorship but civility.
The Pelican staff has determined the level and without their consent there is no community.
The actions/comments on the board reflect the community and standards of civility to protect the populous at large seem reasonable.
I enjoy posting here but if it becomes a haven for attack artists and hate speech I will excuse myself from the table as many have done already.

Good job Pelican, as always, you continue for offer a great space for learning, debate and reflection.

A little sarcasm in the morning?

SlowToady 03-16-2007 07:53 AM

I thought he might just be doing a little ass-kissing early in the morning.

What in the HECK is wrong with what he's saying??

I, for one, totally agree with his comments. It's the countercomments by some of you guys that I don't understand. Are you being rude and antagonistic because you have nothing better to do, because that's the way you are or are you just incapable of civil discourse?

Explain it to me please!

Scott at Pelican Parts 03-16-2007 08:31 AM

We at Pelican thank our moderators -- who volunteer their time to watch these forums. Most of their time is spent deleting Viagra spam posts, so it's not all glamour.

BlueSkyJaunte 03-16-2007 08:35 AM

They just don't care for the Hitlary potshots.

NICKG 03-16-2007 08:38 AM

what, you guys don't sell Viagra? makes me question why we are here....

DaveE 03-16-2007 08:41 AM

Odd to compare Hillary to Hitler considering who's currently piloting the ship...........

cairns 03-16-2007 08:45 AM

Oh God here we go again......

thrown_hammer 03-16-2007 08:48 AM

Wow, even a "thank you mods" thread is about politics!

DaveE 03-16-2007 08:51 AM

Apologies for my retort..........

Absolutely no sarcasm intended and since when is a thank you " a** kissing"?

Even a "thank you" for promoting civility digresses into slime.

As for the Hillary statement, I'm doing a marketing survey to determine the profitability of a bumper sticker. Just good old capitalism at work.

The more complaints I get the better the product must be.

Thank you for your input.

So.....that was sarcasm? ;)

DaveE 03-16-2007 09:32 AM

I didn't even notice the stupid 'bumper sticker'. I was responding to the 'Hitlary' remark.

Actually, it's kind of dumb. Do people still remember that?

Donating used underwear to charity, now that I remember. That was a good one and now I do it! :D

You noticed it now.
Thanks for the input. I'll add you to my survey. Please feel free to vote again.

The term "Hitlary" is unnecessary and unfortunate.

Cheers

BTW: my response was not directed at you.

BlueSkyJaunte 03-16-2007 09:49 AM

If you're going to sell that as a bumper sticker, you should probably use correct English grammar (instead of Web grammar) so your customers don't look like idiots.

Rot 911 03-16-2007 09:54 AM

I bet this thread was secretly sponsored by the Israeli Anti-Defamation League.

SlowToady 03-16-2007 10:01 AM

When you post a THANK YOU MODS right after two threads pop up questioning the actions of said mods.

If you really appreciated the job the mods did, don't you think a nice, private PM or email would have been more touching?

Or how about posting it BEFORE there are two threads questioning their actions?

Your post had good timing, and thanked the mods some were questioning. Sounds and looks like ass kissing to me. Just calling it as I see it.

True, Blue! Plus it's too small here, hence no indication it's a bumper sticker, and anyway, what the hell does it mean?

DaveE 03-16-2007 10:28 AM

He's making reference, I believe, to the crap the idiot right wing media was spewing after the Clintons departed the White House, showing that some will believe anything they read, or hear.

dd74 03-16-2007 10:36 AM

Thanks Dave, but if I have to do research to figure out a bumper sticker, I really can't be bothered.

cairns 03-16-2007 10:57 AM

Actually if I were doing the bumper sticker I'd say:

Hillary
First she stole the silverware
Now she wants the whole house.

Unfortunately I don't put any bumper stickers on my car hence I wouldn't be a good source of revenue.

BTW- what's with the Edwards/Kerry stickers?- Why would their supporters keep them on for (literally) years after the election was lost?

Why are they usually on Subaru's, Corolla wagons & older Volvo's? (usually in poor shape)? Do these people all wear birkenstocks? Are all the Kerry-Edwards supporters ugly older women and balding hippies? And what's with all the other stickers? Why do Save the Earth and clean air stickers mean the car has to have dirty windows? Why don't conservatives cover their cars with stickers? Has anyone done a sociological study on this?

CNN is not really the "vast right wing conspiracy" now is it?

Breaking News
Clintons Agree to Return Furniture
Aired February 7, 2001 - 4:55 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

STEPHEN FRAZIER, CNN ANCHOR: We're going to go back to Washington, now, where CNN's Bob Franken has learned that Bill and Hillary Clinton have told the White House they'll be sending back some of the furnishings which were presented to them as gifts on the occasion of their departing from the White House.

Here's Bob Franken from Capitol Hill -- Bob.

BOB FRANKEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Stephen, you know this is the $28,000 worth of furnishings, a couch, some kitchen set, et cetera, that there were questions raised whether it actually belonged to the White House or belonged to the Clintons.

The Clintons have decided, they said, to send the furniture back. Not that they are in any way acknowledging that the records didn't suggest that they had a right to those furnishings, but since questions are made, they wanted to make sure, they told the U.S. Park Service and the head usher of the White House, wanted to make sure that they did not inadvertently take something that did not belong to them.

Now, the Park Service has put out a statement saying that in fact it will receive the material. The Park Service is the legal custodian of donations that are made to the White House. The Park Service will keep it. A spokesman for the Park Service said that it was his understanding that the material was being shipped right now.

So, the Clintons have decided to end the controversy, even though they clearly argue that the records show they had a right to the furniture. They are sending back that $28,000.

Of course, the home furnishings that the Clintons took with them have been controversial since they left the White House. As a matter of fact, they agreed to pay for about half of it out of a foundation. So they're trying to end this controversy, and of course, Steve, hopefully end all the controversies around the home furnishings.

FRAZIER: Bob Franken with a breaking news story, right up to the final moments of our program. Bob, thank you very much.

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0102/07/bn.03.html

Don't you just love it. Lib spokesman Bob Franken trying his best to make a burglary look like an innocent mistake.
That's is the best spin the Clinton News Network could put on the story.

"Come on Billy, you grab the soap dish and I'll get the towels." If I could only say it with that genuine southern accent of Hillary's.

cairns 03-16-2007 12:03 PM

BTW Clinton's crew did trash the White House upon leaving. That is not BS.

The company I worked for at the time did computer and security conversions. It was indeed vandalized, like something college kids would do on a rampage- and they did take a lot of the "W"s off keyboards. I would have guessed the damage at around $50K not 200 (primarily the work on the computers) but I don't know if anyone ever actually totalled it up.

cairns 03-16-2007 12:18 PM

I was wrong- the damage was about $20K and someone did add it up (from truth or fiction):

Summary of eRumor:
When George W. Bush took over the presidency in 2001, his new staff arrived in the offices of the White House to find that there had been widespread pranks and vandalism by the departing Clinton staff. Published reports said computers were left unusable, pornography was found on both computers and walls, and telephone systems were trashed by the cutting of cables and wires.

The Truth:
The final, official report from the Government Accounting Office was released on June 11, 2002. The 220 page document says there was damage, although not as much as some of the early reports had suggested. The GAO says the damage included 62 missing computer keyboards, 26 cell phones, two cameras, ten antique doorknobs and several presidential medallions and office signs. The damage estimate was about $20,000. Clinton critics say the report proves that the departing Clinton staff members acted recklessly and disrespectfully. Clinton supporters say the report shows that the allegations of vandalism were exaggerated and that there were similar incidents when Clinton took over the White House from the staff of George Bush.

The GAO report concludes that even though damage was verified and that some of it appeared to have been intentional, there was not clear evidence of who was responsible for it.

This has been a subject of contention since President Bush took office. There were reports of vandalism, graffiti, and obscene messages in White House offices by outgoing Clinton staffers. Bush downplayed the reports saying he wanted to move on with the presidency. Clinton supporters, however, charged that the story was not true and that the Bush forces had made up the story to make Bush's staff look better than Clinton's. Former President Clinton offered to pay for any damage and his supporters called for an investigation.

May 18, 2001 the General Accounting Office issued a three-page letter that said that it was unable confirm the damage largely to a lack of records from the White House. The letter also said that the condition of the White House offices was "...consistent with what we would expect to encounter when tenants vacate office space after an extended occupancy." As to any details of damage, the GAO letter said For supporters of former President Clinton, that seemed to end the matter. They proclaimed victory, called the whole story an urban legend, and asked the White House to apologize.

In response, White House press secretary Ari Fleischer outlined the details of the damage, most of which was in the Eisenhower Execitive Office Building adjacent to the White House. On June 3, 2001 The Washington Post quoted Fleischer as saying that the damage included the removal of the letter "W" from 100 computer keyboards, five missing brass nameplates with the presidential seal on them, 75 telephones with cover plates missing or apparently intentionally plugged into the wrong wall outlets, six fax machines relocated in the same way, ten cut phone lines, two historic door knobs missing, overturned desks and furniture in about 20 percent of the offices, obscene graffiti in six offices, and eight 14-foot loads of usable office supplies recovered from the trash. According to Fleischer, there was one incident in the White House itself, a photocopy machine that had copies of naked people hidden in the paper tray so they would come out from time to time with other copies.

Critics of the Bush administration said they didn't trust the White House report.

On June 5, 2001, the General Accounting Office announced that it had launched an investigation into the matter, which was released on June 11, 2002.

There was a companion story that Air Force One had been the victim of the outgoing Clintons and that numerous items from aboard the plane had been pilfered. President Bush himself told reporters aboard Air Force one on February 12, 2001, that the report was not true. According to Salon Washington correspondent Jake Tipper, Bush brought up the subject because the chief steward aboard Air Force One told him the allegations were false.

DaveE,
You quote this : http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=1689 and then go on to criticize others about believing anything that they read or hear???

Isn't that a bit contradictory???

Could Turbo be channelling Mul 1/2/3/4? The Freeper regurgitations are eerily familar...the location similar....the dogma near identical. Guanatanamo bay is a resort, waterboarding is a spa treatment.....the media is a lefty plot....

Man, this thread was not anything close to what it could or should have been. I think the dearth of civility and simple respect that people in real life show one another is amplified on the web by anonymity and lack of consequences from words/actions.

It really is sad that something is put up as a sincere attaboy to the moderators and is immediately attacked as obsequious blather. Further confirmation of my belief that the average person is a total waste of skin. I am not surprised a bit.

I want stars!

Why haven't I gotten any stars for all my kind words?!?

It's not fair that some get stars and I don't get any. Explain your actions moderator! That's all I'm asking for. If you don't explain why you give stars to some and not to others we know you must be biased!

nostatic 03-17-2007 07:52 AM

You all get gold stars! You're all special! You're all WINNERS!

All super-D-duper. Although I like the obsequious blather sometimes. In fact, I'll call a 976-OBS-EQUIOUS just to hear a little....you know....action.
