My 79K of American Airlines miles were about to expire, so I traded them for 2 "Good anywhere in the world, good anytime" nights at Marriott.
Called up Marriott and set up Margarita and I at the Champs Elysee Marriott in an "upgraded" room. We had to pay EU$ 120 on top of using the certificate. The room rate otherise was...EU$ 830 per night. So my 35K miles from American is getting us an $1100 room for $160. Once in a while, something goes right!

Red, you can also sell them on-line. Going rate is 1.5 cents a mile - not alot but its something.

Thats a nice hotel, try to get passes to the exec lounge. Spent many an hour there... free wine after 5 PM!

So that is 2.7cents per mile. Of course, I remember using 70,000 Pan Am miles to get 2 first class round trip tickets from NYC to Hawaii. Plus they paid 80% of the Hotel and a rental car for a week. And that is probably why they went out of business. Not just that, but that is an indication.
