Think about it... That Ancient Greek History prof. doesn't really have to keep that current with the times... However the prof's in the CS/IS world? I've seen the industry change downt to the core so many times since I graduated 15 years ago that I don't know how you'd keep up as an outsider...

Yes, the prof's ARE outsiders looking in. They are training folks on the concepts needed in "the industry" without having been there for quite some time. Even the ones at Purdue, who were top.notch. were a year or two behind. You know software years are like dog-years, so that's quite a bit.

I work with a lot of programmers from India. Some are sharp as razors, some not. Some work for my employer, some work for vendors. The fundamental problem I see are that the ones that work for vendors (and this applies to non-Indians as well), by nature, are more interested in making their employer happy than mine. Beating deadlines to maximize profit makes their employer happy, producing quality applications that require minimal rework and are stable and maintainable make my employer happy.

Most of the Indian guys I know are just trying to make a better life for themselves, they can hardly be blamed for that.
