Probe of tainted pet food eyes ingredient from China

Probe of tainted pet food eyes ingredient from China

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/03/24/pet.food.recall.ap/index.html

the latest in this tragic story.

Who is responsible for testing ineternational ingredients that go into the foods we feed to our beloved pets?

Everytime my wife travels to China she always gets sick from the food. Don't those Chinese ever wash their hands??
As a pet owner, this story makes me mad.

The real problem is that the Chinese economy has developed so quickly that government controls on things such as this have simply not kept pace.

When I lived in Hong Kong, a group from the local university did some random tests of vegetables and fruit from China and found that all were saturated with toxins from pesticides etc. I am told by friends who still live there that these problems have not gone away, but have actually been exacerbated in recent years by China's increasingly relentless emphasis on productivity and the bottom line.

Don't want to turn this into a China-bashing exercise, but if you are consuming foodstuffs from China there is a every chance that you are consuming toxins and hormones etc. the levels of which are not subject to any meaningful control by any regulatory agency.

The REASON everyone keeps demanding schit from China is precisely BECAUSE the government over there doesn't keep controls on the companies. Keeps the price down because they can do whatever the hell they want and play "fast and loose" at all times.

I'm not advocating huge degrees of regulation or a police state against business interests, but CLEARLY there's a very absent sort of any regulation at all (environmental, health, life-safety, etc.) over there. Certainly not enough.

This won't be the last incident. Not by a longshot.

Been to plenty of rendering plants and a fair share of pet food plants as well. Rats are common and place. Not sure how rat poison could have entered the feed stream. Its all pretty much closed off unless it was intentional.

Then again, they should just throw the rats into the cookers and render their protein.

Anyone that has ever actually been to Asia will know exactly how this happened.

I lived there for 7 years. You'd better get used to this kind of thing. Like the problem with our southern border, modern 'economics' are bringing this globalized problem here to roost.

You allowed it to happen, you deserve whats happening to you.

How many, One dog and 15 cats die in a month and it's all over the news, all over the OT forum as if it were a really big deal?
Let me ask you, how many dogs and cats were euthanized in animal shelters during the same time period? Probably many thousands.
Let's keep things in perspective.
My last 3 dogs have been rescued from the shelter.
If those people are really animal lovers as they say they are, they would never consider buying a dog from a breeder or pet shop because they would realize when they do they are committing a shelter dog to death.

Before this is over, there will be 100's in not thousands maimed or killed. A few sites, list over 300 dogs that have died. These sites are self-policed so accuracy is questionable.

We believe our dog, that died last month, was killed by IAMS and their suppliers. He had all the symptoms. None of this was airing on the news then even though Menu Foods had their own test animals dieing at the same time. They could have brought the recall out 3 weeks sooner. Not soon enough to save our pet, but countless others didn't need to suffer.

The ones that burn my ass are the ones that say "oh, we're moving and our new place won't allow pets". So the pet goes to the pound end ends up dead in a week. Happens every day - sickening, irresponsible f*cktards.

How 'bout finding a place that DOES allow your pets you *********? Or better still, thinking about that BEFORE you decide to have pets at all!

Both of our cats are "foundlings"...so I guess you could say "rescued". Both neutered females...just spent well over a grand on one for radioactive iodine treatment for an overactive thyroid. Nothing like a "free" pet, right? Yes, people get VERY attached to their pets. Terry H., I feel for you...it must really hurt, not knowing what was wrong...

You better off feeding them raw meat or road kill! I would never feed a dog of cat dogfood or catfood. Biggest scam sense milk.

we run into this alot with fish, stores like petsmart, petco and the like will sell you an oscar and a 10 gallon tank for it.....unfortunately they do not educate people that some of these fish will outgrow the tank in 6 months (oscars need 50 gal MINIMUM per fish).....
to counter this a good friend has started a non-profit "monster" fish rescue, his site is still under construction ( www.monsterfishrescue.com ), we're just tired of seeing un-educated consumers leave their oversized fish in 5 gallon bucket in front of pet stores...who don't even have the means to properly care for fish of this size.

the pet food poisoning is just gross negligence, i heard on the news a lawyer said "pets are not children"....i just about threw my remote at the screen.....

Boy, do I ever disagree with that one! Posche-o-phile? That's how we got the cat that just had the $$$ treatment. Neighbors moved. They took their dog, abandoned the cat.

Thank you, appreciate the thoughts. My wife still sobs when thinking we inadvertantly contributed to his death by providing the tainted food. We all know eventually we'll have to say goodbye to our pets, but in these cases, the emotional toll on the owners is tremendous.

Isn't the feeding of "recycled animal protein" the cause of BSE ? So why would it be acceptable to our pets??
