Even if you're not into Heavier music, Tool is worth a listen. They are heavy, but absolutely melodic. Their musical abilities are clear when they play live- they sound extremely tight. They will change up thier arrangements too, to make it unique. Another cool listen was off of their live CD a few years ago- they covered No Quarter. Its awesome.

Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see armageddon soon. I certainly hope we will. I can't imagine why you wouldn't Welcome any change, my friend. I wanna see it all come down. suck it down. flush it down. |
I have been an absolute Tool nut since '94.
My head is filled with worthless Tool factoids. I'm glad to see there are a few others on this board who appreciate great music. I've actually emailed Danny Carey a few times. :) |
Did you know maynard attended Westpoint for a short amount of time? The lyrics from Intollerance reference part of the Westpoint honor code: "I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those that do"...
"You lie cheat, and steal, you lie, cheat, and steal..." The guitarist, Adam Jones, is an artist in every sense of the word. He was an art major, I believe and is responsible for most, if not all, of the Tool videos. ...particularly the stop-annimation segments from their earlier videos. Adam also designed many of the skulls seen on the alien spaceship in the second Predator movie. :) |
More specifically, I would like to say that I would saw off both of my testicles with a rusty lid to a tin can if I could do this:
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RUcdMva9RnQ"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RUcdMva9RnQ" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> |
I'm a fan of a heavier sound but it must be accompanied by some intelligence.
Tool, Marylin Manson, Trent Reznor, Rage, Alice in Chains all do it for me. |
I woke up late one Sunday morning and heard a band practicing on one of the sound stages where I work.
It took me a few minutes to realize that it was Tool. A couple of days later I saw Maynard as he left the Studio lot (driving a Lexus :)). |

There were no vocals in the clip I listened to. Am listening to another of the videos posted further up.
Hmm...listened to Opiate and Prison Sex. I don't hear how he's all that and a bag of chips. At least Ozzy had his own distinct "voice." I'll stand by my original comment. Sounds like Black Sabbath. Without the hooks. Ymmv. |

Love Ozzie. Think he wrote some great lyrics. War Pigs is just as relevant today as it was 36 years ago. Still sounds just as good.

Tool is great art rock with a message. Sabbath comes from a more personal place. It's less contrived and more emotional. |
Tool rocks.
|
Jack, thats officially the coolest thing I've ever read here.
|
This is a really tight band. I hear what Nostatic is saying, but there is something different or maybe something more to these guys. They have a different kind of energy than any other band I've ever seen. Helmet had something similar when they played live. Maybe Sabbath had the same kind of thing going, I don't know.

Not April yet. Here's some more trivia that ties it in to Pelican. When I got my 911 in Indiana, Tom and I flew out to drive it back together. When the electrical system failed in St. Louis, we were stranded for two days. I remember a long afternoon at a St. Louis bar with some rock people where the game was to name the 'most Metal' song of all time. None could top 'War Pigs.'

well, Jack is a writer, so he has to be full of BS. But I doubt he's pulling your leg on this one...
