I have a slide/negative scanner. Cost $120 or so over the internet. Trying to save all my families old photos so it was worth it.

Tried this years ago and had a scanner that plugged into the printer port on the computer. Hard to setup and terrible slow. The newer USB models are much better.

Pookie, the "all in one" machines usually do a fair to poor job of scanning slides or negatives. Try it and if no good then spend the $100 to get a separate unit. Its worth it to save the family history.

Dad's old ship - DDE 719 - USS Frasier - he tried to join when he was 16 - returned on his 17th birthday. Saw action in the Pacific.

That's him on the left - about 11 years before he joined - circa 1931 - Check out the shoes - the Depression in Texas

VaSteve,
I do believe that little bit of a driver's side fender on the left of the photo belongs to a 1937 or 38 General Motors car... yours?

Dad:

Dad on the beach with his parents & sister:

Dad has been scanning my grandmother's and great grandmother's pictures for about a year; he's maybe 25% of the way through them. They had a bunch short movies from the 20's converted to VHS... pretty neat to see video of your grandmother as a baby.

No but can you identify the kind of car I was riding in based on the window curvature? It was also a GM.

Well that's not a nice thing to say about his family.

Seriously, what monitor are you using that your edit doesn't look too dark? ...fwiw, I opened it on my big 30", cranked up the backlight until I wanted to put on shades, and it still looked too dark.

tell me how this looks on your guys screens.

I have an lcd which made it look darker than the origional but I would admit I found it difficult to get a colour/contrast balance and the result I got was making me consider deleting it.
The one above looks too contrasty and bright.

Man, I wish I had the tech skills of you guys...I can post here, send email, and that's about it. Anybody want to go to the 1971 Porsche Parade? I have 3 carousels, 100 each, full of slides I took there. Oh well, ancient history...who cares. Gotta admit though, I often chuckle over some of the "expert" comments made by one person who was born that year about how it was back then....

BTW - My uncle lived a productive life and died in 1999.
IMO, this is one fantastic photo...the faces tell the story.

PWD, --sounds very cool.
I just processed 18 carousels (yeah, 100 each) for my uncle. I'm still set up if you want yours digitized. (assuming they are in the standard carousels)

Looks like I need to put "buy a scanner" on the to-do list. I have lots and lots of old photos that I would like to convert.
