Question Can someone recommend a good free antivirus, please?

I dumped out my Norton because it sucks and on a previous thread there were some recommendations. I uploaded one that you guys gave good reviews but every time I tried to install it I get "some files are corrupt please reload file.". I got that three times, I also tried running the exe file from their site and got the same error message so I am looking for some other options.

Yeah I know "buy a mac"... now we got that over with how about some less expensive ideas.

I use Norton for free (Vista Ultimate) I am a govt contractor so it is free for use on personal PC's if they are used to conduct business.

I went from Norton/Symantec (which sucked) to AVG to Avast!

AVG was OK until I went to buy it. It said it was $XX.XX dollars but when I went to add it to my cart it adds $10.95 for a "CD backup" - which it won't let you remove from the cart. I would have bought it if they hadn't pulled that trick at the checkout.

I see they've fixed that now (but not for the Linux version).

I really like Avast!

Please explain to me why Norton sucks. Besides from the DoD utilizing it, every company I have ever worked for (This included Fortune 100 & 500) companies all utilized it. I have never had a problem with Norton AV software. I doubt many large IT organizations are going to utilize AVG or Avast. For a free version I can understand utilizing AVG if you do not have free access to Norton or McAfee.

The apps on my Norton sys works seemed pretty good but I picked up something that clobbered Norton. I cant reload it or run it from their web site. When I called for some live help I got Gondi with an accent so thick I cant understand what he is saying. After a couple of trys with Gandi and Hodgi I ask for a tech that doesn't have a Indian accent so they hook me up with someone who has a Asian accent even worse than Gondi! Any thing out side their stupid flow chart is impossible for them to deal with. I finally decided Pi$$ on em and wont buy another Norton product.

Just because Fortune 100 & 500 use it doesn't mean it's worth a ****. Hell, a lot of them run Linux, too...I've used Norton a few times and had nothing but trouble with it. If it works for you, great...everyone's environment is different.

I use AntiVir PE Classic and like it, no problems so far.

Norton used to be great - back in the DOS days.

Free windows based antivirus one more vote for AVG. http://free.grisoft.com

However, if there is nothign that actually ties you to windows, either a new Mac or a Ubuntu download... www.ubuntu.com
