Porn '.xxx' address rejected

LISBON, Portugal (AP) -- The agency that sets the Internet addressing guidelines influencing how people navigate the Web defeated a proposal Friday to give adult Web sites their own ".xxx" domain.

Many in the adult-entertainment industry and religious groups alike had criticized the plan, which the Canadian government also warned this week could leave the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers in the tricky business of content regulation.

The 9-5 decision by ICANN's board came nearly seven years after the proposal was first floated by ICM Registry LLC. It was the third time ICANN has rejected such a bid. One member abstained from voting.

Many of the board members said they were concerned about the possibility that ICANN could find itself in the content regulation business if the domain name was approved. Others criticized that, saying ICANN should not block new domains over fears like that, noting that local, state and national laws could be used to decide what is pornographic and what is not.

It was not immediately clear if ICM would revise its proposal again, abandon the bid or perhaps appeal the decision or take action through the courts.

If "adult" material were restricted to it's own XXX domain I think it's a great idea.

However, that is unlikely to happen. So what good will an additional area provide?

It provides whoever is in the role of 'internet moderator' a reason to yank whatever sites not on a .xxx domain that see fit based on inappropriate content. Sure, barnyardlove.com is an easy one, but what about some soft-core stuff? What about artwork? Where do you draw the line? Its VERY good that this initiative failed, IMO.

Perhaps the government should start an "adult-content determination" committee, with a panel of porn experts paid $100k a year to decide if something is offensive or not. Of course, then we should also get a 'high-court of pornography' set up for the proprietors of sites that get removed to make appeals to. We should probably build a new low-security prison too, to have extra space for violators who put nipples on non-.XXX sites. If that runs out of space, lets just let child-molestors out early on good behavior, so we can have space for these porn-site guys- the people REALLY bringing ruin to our society.

Next week's news: President Bush denounces the failure adopting the .xxx domain. Demands greater controls of this 'filth on the internet'.

News 2 weeks later: In a stunning development, Al Gore logs into Bush's computer and finds japanese sex video websites in the history.

Later that day: New thread on Pelican Parts Off-Topic "Bush is a hypocrite!!! How can politicians do this? What is becoming of us?"

That's why I said it is unlikely that adult content would be restricted to it's own domain. Once the freedom to post whatever you want, wherever you want, in a public domain, is restricted then freedom of speech/press is compromised.
