Ahhh. nice garage project.
My brother and I had built the companion to this piece the day after Christmas, which including a trip to Lowes and the "engineering" took all freaking day. It had been too cold all winter to spend the day building the big one but the wood was neatly stacked in front of the lawnmower and the grass is growing. So, time for a little spring cleaning. This took me all day by myself. It's not exactly Ikea quality (or completely square) but it keeps the junk off the floor. This took all day as well, but since I was working alone, I built the bottom of the frame, set it up and climbed up with ladders to add the rest. I actually climbed inside it to screw the brackets from within.
I used the Simpson strong tie brackets which ain't cheap, but are quality. The screws are like $10 for 100, but worth it. The first 5 threads have little teeth and they go right in...every time. Nicest screws I have ever worked with. Each bracket has something like 12 screws in it. Dimensions on this monster are 30" x 48" x 10'. The top shelf it 10" high and cleared the light in the photo by 1". My garage hasn't been this tidy since the house was built. LOL ![]()

Universal rule of physics:
Any horizontal surface will quickly be covered with junk. Corollary: The more horizontal surfaces, the more junk.

Lookin good. I made something similar, but left the bottom shelf open to roll the mig under, and hopefully a few engines someday.
It helps to prioritize tools to their work area. The stuff you need quick- such as a hammer, a drill, dustpan, etc.. should be within easy reach without difficulty.

The stuff on that rack is "medium deep storage"....I use it once in a while but not terribly often. The tools and oil are to the left of the workbench out of the photo.
Under the bottom shelf are the other wheels for the track car. Dead 944 engine under the workbench. Can you ID the item on the very top of the rack?

Never know though..after all, "might need em some day..." We have/had a bunch of racks like that, although dad went with the Gorilla racks. Sure enough, Moneyguy, all filled with stuff. Stuff that never LEAVES the rack.

Nice - I like that - and will probably look for somthing like that for my garage project now - it has 12'9" ceilings - so I would sure enjoy if I could store stuff vertically.

Thanks.... it's a big improvement over the 18" deep "bakers rack" I got from Costco. The extra depth of this thing make it so much nicer and keep a lot of extra junk off the floor.

Hey..the junk is necessary....It keeps the horizontal surface from moving. Sorta like gravity.....
