Ok, so what should we see in Hong Kong?
Slumming it at the Peninsula in Hong Kong for 3 days. Any must sees? We are headed for Beijing next. Past the obvious historical sites, any hidden corners to explore?
Anyone know of a good pearl dealer in either city?

Eat. Great food- especially obvisoulsy, the Chinese. Good places, cheap places. Get up to the Soho district and mix it up with the locals and the expats. Great town.

Causeway Bay / Tsim Sha Tsui for shopping (be very careful of dishonest electronic shops; many, many stories of tourists being ripped off, you've been warned!!)
Stanley Market (Take a number #6 bus from Exchange Square, sit on the upper deck, you will enjoy the tight, winding road along the way) Mongkok - Tung Choi Street - (also known as Women's Street- lots of fake things to buy, a good place to flex your bargaining power; be careful of your valuables) Walk along Gloucester Road to visit the numerous car dealerships - Porsche, Lambo, Mini, VW, Lotus, Lexus (Ask salesmen for the price lists, you will be shocked!!!) for example: US$250k for an Audi R8 Tram ride in HK. For USD$0.25, its the best value to experience HK's urban life in one journey. Subway rides in MTR -- the best gift the British gave to HK people Central - Financial heart of HK - Visit notable buildings such as HSBC, Bank of China, IFC Star Ferry rides at night Soho, Lan Kwai Fong for the best nightlife in HK Escalator ride from Central to Mid-Levels- the escalators are so closely built between residental buildings that you feel you are in people's living rooms. visit the Felix Bar located at the top floor of your hotel at night. Have a nice drink and then visit the toilet. You will experience the best toilet view in the world while relieving yourself ![]() Also, did you know Rolls Royces delivered 14 Phantoms to Pennisula last month. If price is reasonable, rent one for a day and travel in style!! Don't get too offended if people bump into you too often, HK people are always in hurry. when are you heading to HK?

Ferry ride to Shenzhen at night is a sight to behold. I think jade and pearl are cheaper on the Mainland. Just make sure you have a local help you out with the purchase.

Go to the night markets, and then take the ferry to Macau and take lots of money. The buys there are usually a bit cheaper than in HK.
First trip to HK I went there with 2 bags, and flew home with 5. Found too many things to buy. If you buy more than you can stuff in the bags find a cheap roller and take it along.

An exit sign. If it was still owned by the Brits, I say stay and enjoy the sights. Now that the Coms have it, I think I would not have gone in the first place. ![]() (It's sort of like the guy who went to Iran last month on business---been missing for same month---now the Brits have 15 sailors missing/hyjacked---see where this goes?) ![]() I like the US just fine.... Just my opinion----enjoy! regards---rhjames ![]()

when you get to Beijing, hit the Pearl Market. Go to the top floor (5th I think). That's where the good stuff is. If at all possible take a native speaker to negotiate price. Figure about 1/3 to 1/2 of the original asking price for lao wai, although if you have an aggressive native you can pay less than that.
Great Wall is a fairly short drive outside the city. Go on a weekday if you can. ignore mr rhjames. He knows not of what he speaks. Mainland China is an amazing place. Good for getting perspective and losing some xenophobia... |

HK is cool get some shirts made at Sam's Tailor on Nathan Road. Not cheap but great quality. So-so service. On the other hand forget it, go find another tailor for less and better service, 100s of them around.
I will be in Beijing this Sunday till Thrusday. LMK if you want to hook up. Working during the week though.
