Reccomend me some good jazz fusion

Just recently discovered Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters.

Love this stuff. Was wondering if you all could suggest stuff in the same vein. Thanks

Return to forever - That's the name of the band.
Romantic warrior is a good album of theirs to start with, you can still get their CD's online at barns and noble.

Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior

Also, check out Adam Nitti. Great bass player (6 string) and a pretty decent PCA DE junkie as well.

Lots of great jazz pianists over the years. Try some early (or late) Chick Corea, Ahmad Jamal, Bill Evans, Brad Mildahl, Alan Broadbent (personal favorites).

Current favorite is Laurence Hobgood, the accompanist for Kurt Elling (best current jazz vocalist). He hasn't cut a CD yet, but his piano solos on Elling's CDs are great.

BTW, all players I mentioned play straight-ahead jazz, not jazz fusion - so identified by synthesized EFXs and/or monotonous b.g. rythym created by a computer (maybe an overgeneralization). Hancock started out playing straight-ahead jazz. His later stuff sequed into fusion and EFX.

But it's whatever you like.

Jazz fusion is kind of a generic term.

I like "Weather Report"- the album "Heavy Weather" is pretty cool.
The cut "Rockin' in rhythm" is a nice redo on the Ellington tune from the 40's (?).

"Spyro Gyra"- also good.

Weather Report's "Heavy Weather" is a classic jazz album; probably a must in any jazz collection.

Spyro Gyra is okay for easy-listening jazz (e.g. Shaker Song).

Really dig Chameleon off the Headhunters album. Love that ARP sound.

Just downloaded Return to Forever and Weather Report. Thanks for the suggestions!

You should check out Down to the Bone... pretty funky stuff, yet still retaining the cheesyness of most fusion bands The "Urban Grooves Albumn" is particularly good.

Jim,
Yes, Jaco is the king of the bass! Pat Metheny and John McLaughlin are also excellent, you have good taste!!

Not labeled a "jazz fusion" band and I don't have any of there stuff but I saw Phish on TV and they had a very rock/jazz fusion sound.

I have some Pat Metheny CD's and his DVD of a concert in Japan and I saw him at the Greek Theater. I like his band but I wish he would change the sound of his guitar once in a while, it sounds cool but after about half an hour to forty five minutes it starts to wear a little thin.

I saw Stanley Clarke play and, being a former bass player, I was stunned. That guy answered my questions about how a standup bass might be useful.

Has nobody heard of Simpleflower?

Word has it that one of our own Pelicans has a friend who knows someone related to the cousin of the bass player....something like that.

Jaco Pastorius, bass player extraordinaire, and mentioned earlier, was also a part of/leader of Weather Report.
