Peanut connaisseurs - help a newbie

Having grown up in a country where peanuts don't grow naturally, peanuts to me are the roasted salted things that come in bags or cans and are made by Planters.

Since moving to the US, I realize that there are lots of other kinds of peanuts too - unshelled peanuts, boiled peanuts, Asian peanuts ...

I just bought a can of The Peanut Shop "Hand Cooked Virgina Peanuts" and they are very tasty. Not knowing any better, I'd say these are the best peanuts I've ever had.

Do we have any peanut experts on this board (working for peanuts doesn't count)? What would you recommend a peanut newbie to try next?

Hey thats a question for a Virginian so I'll take it. Hubbs Virginia Peanuts are the finest you will EVER eat. At $18 for a 40z can - they better be. My mom always brings me a few cans at Christmas. I promise you that these are the BEST!!!

I love peanuts (and just about all other nuts, too), eat them just about every day.

They are an amazingly dense food. Didja know pound for pound they have more calories than sugar, more protein than egg yolks, and more fat than heavy cream?

That's what makes them such a satisfying snack!

Oh ya and when you buy the HUbbs - put them in the refer for a night and eat them cold. Damn I want a can now - get me one!!!

Pretty sure the Costco branded peanuts are from Anne's House of Nuts. Not gourmet, but fresh, not covered in sugar and not too salty. Good eats.

Chicken Pad Tai - the spicy peanut sauce is in the top ten taste experiences.

I like Feridies on Hwy 58 about an hour outside Norfolk. By there last Friday where I picked up two large cans Friday. I just finished eating a hand full.

http://www.feridies.com/

They are definitely some of the best and I stop there every time I go by and sometimes order by mail. Someone in my family usually gives me a can or two for Xmas.

However.....I have had better. There are peanuts locally (Eastern NC and Va) put up in jars mostly by church groups that are the best I have had. They are more money and in smaller containers but IMO they are the best.

To get the full Southern experience you need a bottle (glass only) of Coke - drink some to make room - then pour in slated peanuts to fill the bottle. Drink Coke and salted peanuts at the same time. Excellent! Salted peanuts and Coke go good together.

Bert - done that! Coked Peanuts! Thats a hunters / Fishermans trick. Allows you to eat and drink with one hand free! Not sure but I think it started in Texas.

Just like a Texan, who would also eat Tai food, to try an lay claim to something like this!

No, I am pretty sure it started where the peanut did...NC or Va. Actually I am pretty sure a kid in my hometown of Elm City, NC invented it in May of 1956 to mark the end of the school year at Ocie's Store where we went every day after school.....for peanuts and Coke and sometimes Nabs and Coke. Sometimes a NeHi but never a Pepsi.

Actually I also like the peanut sauce in some Thai dishes!

Find an old dude on the side of the road with an old american made pickup. He should have some water going, and some peanuts boiling in it. Ask for half regular, half spicy.

My wife recently bought me a 'healthy' snack mix with various nuts.

After seeing how expensive it was i made my own. Shelled pistachios, peanuts and walnuts. Absolutely wonderful snack!

Don't forget (or did you know), Lance is a locally owned Charlotte hometown company! Although it is public a lot of the stock is still in the hands of the founding family - and they are form Charlotte.

Just tried these for the first time in my life. Down in Alabama. They were good!

Try a West African resturant. The peanut soups are excellent.

Relax - I'm not trying to take anything away from NC - geeze. Besides, If its a NC thing, we would be talking Nipchee and Pepsi - Right? Not Coke!

Dottore 04-10-2007 07:10 AM

Another vote for Feridies extra large gourmet peanuts. Sensational!

craigster59 04-10-2007 07:53 AM

Try these if you like crunchy peanuts. Trader Joe's Blister Peanuts are some of the best I've had.

Yea, I forgot it's Pepsi that is NC homegrown - for I while I was thinking it was Coke. But Coke does go better with peanuts - NC or Va varity!

I believe Coke is Ga - do they have peanuts down there (except for the few that Carter claims to have grown)?
