On the Diamond Princess.
You must do the "shore excursions" - plenty of choices, gotta get of the ship and explore.

The picture of the prison looks like the one we went by on our way to the rain forest canopy trip. We went last August. I don't think I will return to Peurto Vallarta. The canopy trip was the best part of our trip.

You look like you took the trip I took in December with my wife. Cabo, Mazatlan, and Puerta Viarta. Excellent trip. We saw the Diamond Princess when were were in Mazatlan.
I think its on the the best cruises to do.

I took the same cruise about 14 years ago. Haven't been back to mexico since.
It stunk. Trash, feces, people trying to rip you off, timeshare come ons, I had enough. Puerta vallarta was nice looking from the boat, looked like tj up close, should have never got off the boat. Senior frogs at mazatlan was fun, but I can get drunk anywhere. Cabo smelled like an outhouse, and the tourist traps wanted $4 for a beer. No thanks, if I want to see mexico I drive 10 miles to santa ana. |

We did a crusie out of New Orleans that took us to Playa del Carmen with an excursion to Xel-Ha for the day and then cruised over to Cozumel. This was the year before Katrina. An awesome trip. CANNOT say enough good things about Xel-Ha. Look it up on the internet, its one of the most beautiful places I've ever been and I've been to a lot of places.
As it would happen I just book a trip to Cozumel for the last week in May. We'll undoubtedly take a ferry ride over to the mainland and go to Xel-Ha again.

I've had much better trips to the Gulf/Caribean/Cortez/Yucatan sides (Puerto Penasco, Loreto, Merida, Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen). YMMV... Oh, and there is a Senior Frog's in Playa del Carmen literally right next to Skydive Playa. I made a few jumps there and it was an eye opener. First, the LZ was basically anywhere on the beach you could find a spot! Second, Playa seems to be a popular vacation spot for Brazilians. Sooo, you had to negotiate the several beautiful Brazilian women sunbathing (topless), who would stand up and clap as you came in swooping the beach. Ahh, the memories... ![]() |

Yeah, it totally dpends on what your 'mission' is.
Mine was: Never been to Mexico, except Tijuana Wanted warm weather (was 88-91) Wanted a new adventure Shore excursions and to see the different aspects of Mexico That said, the negatives were a few: Aggressive saleskids hawking $1 toys Harbors in PV and Maz were really smelly and the water was an "interesting color" Out in the boonies of PV the plastic trash was everywhere. But that's Mexico, and part of the enjoyment for me was the variety of what I saw and did. Overall: Anything goes in Mexico. A country of enterprising individuals out to make a buck. Sort of a backwater quasi-capitalistic / bartering / poor country with touches of beauty. Interesting place for sure!
