Keith Richards

Waiting in line to get through airport security at MIA I got bumped by a very large guy. I turn around to face him as he says sorry I must get through with a VIP.

Turns out that it was Keith Richards. I never pictured him so tiny and frail. That guy must weigh in at less than 90lbs...

Jeff Higgins 04-10-2007 06:53 PM

Hell, he hasn't eaten anything since the late '60's; what would you expect?

VaSteve 04-10-2007 07:00 PM

Be careful, he might snort you!

legion 04-10-2007 07:04 PM

Won't 40 years of heroine do that?

Shuie 04-10-2007 07:25 PM

eh, he's held his own for a few decades. I loved it when Chuck Berry was giving him "lessons."

Richards is a *great* guitarist. Wrote some of the greatest hooks ever. And sounds like no one else. One of the few original players out there.

What Keith lacks in technical skill he makes up for in creativity. Some people mistake technical prowness for creativity...Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page come to mind as posers..

The guy who combined the technical with the creative was the one and only Jimi Hendrix.

All the Stones look like little dolls.

"All the Stones look like little dolls."

Granny apple dolls, that is.

Jimmy P. is sloppy, probably the best Rythm guitarist that had to play lead.

He is however THE riff master and is a brilliant composer/arranger.

I happen to think he's one of the best.

Thats why his solo career has taken off...huh?

stomachmonkey 04-11-2007 05:27 AM

I don't know. I'm not sure he has really pursued much of a solo career.

A lot of guys in his situation, money, fame, rep, no longer pursue their career in the same manner.

They have reached a place where they can create for their own personal satisfaction. Has nothing to do with the commercial success of the work.

After Bonham died he did not touch a guitar for years, may have been as long as 5 years IIRC. He just lost the desire.

stomachmonkey 04-11-2007 05:32 AM

It's hard to measure these guys.

I think you'd have a difficult time finding anyone that knows music who will say Charlie Watts is not a great drummer.

The uneducated will not be impressed. Watts does not play with the flair of a Neil Pert or the abandon of a Keith Moon. He is by far a better technical drummer than either one.

Could have also been the heroin.

Or the broken hand that may never have healed properly.

I've met Keith Richards before. I got to work security, checking passes in front of the dressing room doors on the Steel Wheels tour in '89. Keith has done a LOT of living. But he played like a champ. And I got to stand a few feet away and watch Charlie Watts bang around on his kit with the mics off. That man IS one of the great ones. I remember hearing some super jazz stuff on the radio while driving in Austria once and afterwards the DJ said that was the Charlie Watts Orchestra. Love those guys!

azasadny 04-11-2007 09:29 AM

Did you ever notice how similar Don Knotts and Mick Jagger look, or should I say "used to look" as Don Knotts is dead? Don probably looks just like Keith Richards now!
