Atheists split over message

Among the millions of Americans who don't believe God exists, there's a split between people such as Greg Epstein, who holds the partially endowed post of humanist chaplain at Harvard University, and so-called "New Atheists."
Epstein and other humanists feel their movement is on verge of explosive growth, but are concerned it will be dragged down by what they see as the militancy of New Atheism.
The most pre-eminent New Atheists include best-selling authors Richard Dawkins, who has called the God of the Old Testament "a psychotic delinquent," and Sam Harris, who foresees global catastrophe unless faith is renounced. They say religious belief is so harmful it must be defeated and replaced by science and reason.
Epstein calls them "atheist fundamentalists." He sees them as rigid in their dogma, and as intolerant as some of the faith leaders with whom atheists share the most obvious differences....

That is indeed the problem: "a-theist"....Against God". If militant enough, it becomes a belief system on its own, matching the definition of a "religion".

Then the differences evaporate. Two groups, both defending and fighting against something that has no proof in the physical world.

Where does the definition I posted misdefine(?) the concept?

Granted, there are belief systems (Bhuddism is one) which actually do not have a god or gods and could be considered athiestic if taken in the modern sense, but the original meaning of the word is "without (or in some definitions against) god(s)". Not to be confused with agnosticism (uncertain or I do not know when it comes to god(s).

Point is that there are "athiests" that ar as militant in their beliefs as some "believers" are. When this happens, the fur flies.

As I understand it, in Zen Bhuddism, the mere suggestion of God or even saying the word God brings disrespectful to God. God is ever-encompassing and by refering to God would be like mentioning air everytime you took a breath. Kinda silly.

I was also under the impression that Jesus Christ was an athiest of sorts because he didn't believe in the Pagan rituals or Hebrewism of the time.

You guys don't get it at all. We don't live our lives thinking about God. What's to be against? We just choose to focus on funner things. To me, church was always boring.

I thought so as well. Growing up Catholic, the only thing Mass afforded me was a chance to check out the hot babes. Going to UCC church with my Wife and in-laws at holidays always presented an opportunity to take a nap.

We go to a United Methodist service now that is actually really good. Music about 75% of the time - mix bettween coral, lite Christian rock, blue-grass and kids playing bells. The sermon is actually interesting. They even have some video screens that present various images. I think if this was around when i was younger I might not have sinned as much only because I would have had more respect and admiration. Then again, there are some sweetass honeys at the UM services!

+1. Recovering Catholic here. For quite a few years my brother and I would go worship at "Our Lady of Chocolate Cruellers" (Dunkin' Donuts) down the street every Sunday morning and then hurry back to get picked up by mom & dad. Don't think they ever got wise to it. Heh heh heh.
