Same here. Truly talented man. This is a loss for everyone who loves and appreciates literature at its best. One of those rare people that actually figures out EXACTLY what they were meant to do in life - and did it.

I'll be re-reading a few of his books on my upcoming trip.

RIP. What a wonderful man - a living legend. I have read his stuff since I was around 14. A sad day.

From Cat's Cradle

God made mud.
God got lonesome.
So God said to some of the mud, "Sit up!"
"See all I've made," said God, "the hills, the sea, the sky, the stars."
And I was some of the mud that got to sit up and look around.
Lucky me, lucky mud.
I, mud, sat up and saw what a nice job God had done.
Nice going, God.
Nobody but you could have done it, God! I certainly couldn't have.
I feel very unimportant compared to You.
The only way I can feel the least bit important is to think of all the mud that didn't even get to sit up and look around.
I got so much, and most mud got so little.
Thank you for the honor!
Now mud lies down again and goes to sleep.
What memories for mud to have!
What interesting other kinds of sitting-up mud I met!
I loved everything I saw!
Good night.
I will go to heaven now.
I can hardly wait...
To find out for certain what my wampeter was...
And who was in my karass...
And all the good things our karass did for you.
Amen.

Jim

One of my favorite authors and artists....

RIP.

I've read most of his work and have sold quite a few in our bookstore over the years. Actually, yesterday was a wild day. I haven't experienced such a feeding frenzy of buyers in one day.... people all of a sudden just gotta have that Vonnegut signed book! And for good reason, I might add. As a collector and a fan, I own most of his books in the signed state. it's a set that will remain in my family for many years to come!

if you visit his homepage, you will see one of his
well-known works as an artist.
This particular one is called "Freedom"

we all have our time on this planet and one day the "bird cage door" opens and we are freed..

Along with Knowles (A Seperate Peace), Salinger, Richard Brautigan and Joseph Heller, Vonnegut was instrumental in forming my love of the written word at a young age.

RIP.

And he had the ability to laugh at himself. Remember his small role in "Back to School?"

[after Diane gives Thornton an 'F' for his report, which was actually written by Kurt Vonnegut]
Diane: Whoever *did* write this doesn't know the first thing about Kurt Vonnegut!
[cut to Thornton's dorm suite]
Thornton Melon: [on the phone] ... and *another* thing, Vonnegut! I'm gonna stop payment on the cheque!
[Kurt tells him off]
Thornton Melon: Fuuck me? Hey, Kurt, can you read lips, *fuuck you*! Next time I'll call Robert Ludlum!
[hangs up]

I posted in the other thread on this, but it really is a sad day for me. It is pouring and grey in New England; as Vonnegut himself (who lived on Cape Cod) once wrote, "nature sympathizes".

Being that Vonnegut is the author who most straddles the line between "popular" fiction (eg Stephen King) and "serious literature" (eg Pynchon, DeLillo) Vonnegut was the author who got me interested in "serious" literature. It is probably due to Vonnegut more than any other writer that I got my BA in English and will have my Master's in the same field by the end of May.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Vonnegut in 2002. He was exactly as you'd expect: funny, self-depreciating, grumpy, yet oddly endearing.

Such a shame. I was a fan of his too, and I've read a few of his books.
