Cycle Miami?

I'm heading down to Miami in May for work (yeah I know, life is tough!). I do 24 hour mountain bike races and have one coming up the end of May, so I need to spend plenty of time on a bike...

I've been to Miami before and have no interest in mixing it up with the traffic. So, my Pelican cyclist friends, where in or near Miami can I ride? I'm willing to throw the bike into the rental car and drive somewhere reasonably safe. I'd take seperate bike paths, rails to trails, large parks etc. I can bring a road bike, a cyclocross bike or a mountain bike. Willing to take multiple loops of trails to add up some mileage.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Also my handsome husband is coming down for a few days, what fun car or outdoors things are available in/around Miami?

angela

I think Broward County parks dept. has some bike parks with trails. I'm sure they have a web site. I lived in Plantation (central Broward) for awhile and there are some in the western part of the county.

I would think there would be clubs with sites too.

The road heading out to Key Bisayne has a bike path seperated from the road for many miles. Bonus is the view is just amazing while riding. There are some bridges too so you'll get some verticle climbs in notorously flat Florida.

Fun car things? What part of Miami? Head to Southbeach and just drool, or go to Coconut Grove and see all the Pasta Rockets and Porsches, too many to count.

Homestead Raceway is not far away either but a quick look at the calander shows a quiet month in May.

My office is in Plantation and I live in Sunrise. There is some biking activity at Markham Park (intersection of I75 North and I595) and I believe there is a mountain bike trail at CB Smith Park which is on Flamingo just north of Pines/Hollywood Blvd.

Hope this helps !

It has been a while but the best mountain biking I ever found while living there was Oleta State Park north of Miami. If I remember correctly it's off 163rd street almost on the water. Trails are short but there are a lot of them. Don't expect many elevation changes.

The causeway going to Key Biscayne is also good, the bridge is one of the few hills you'll find in or around Miami. That's all road though.
