Interesting Opinion Piece on DC Gun Ban Ruling

http://news.yahoo.com/s/weeklystandard/20070318/cm_weeklystandard/gunfightatdccorral

I certainly hope the Supreme Court will agree to hear a 2nd Amendment case soon.

Stuart Taylor from National Journal had an even better op-ed on this last Friday. But I only have the print version and cannot logon to the site to copy it here. I need to go shooting in MD after work one day next month and am wondering if I can load up my car with my guns and still park in my office bldg.

The best part of that is the realization that the First and Fourth Amendments would never be interpreted as protecting a collective right, nor should the Second.

Even the term "collective right" is extremely dangerous, since our country was founded as a nation of individuals with rights.

The right to own and carry a gun to me is simple. De Facto, people have owned and carried guns in this country for over 200 years. What amendment has been written since the 2nd and 4th that has changed that? None. Something was legal for about 150 years or so and then suddenly it wasn't?

So Hugh, how does that reasoning work for you in CA?

So, Rick, has the ban been dismantled, or are they (predictably) dragging their feet?

My guess will be that the Supreme Court will declare the 2nd amendment a personal right, but will also state that regulation is OK too. I cannot imagine a clean "win".

No, the ban has not changed. I have no idea how it works when something this longstanding gets overturned. I would have thought the DA or even local US Atty. would have to tell the city council and police dept. to start complying. But obviously, no one in the city gov't. wants this to happen, so it will probably take more lawsuits. Sure wish they'd get started, as I don't like always being unarmed in DC.
