What's going on at VA Tech?

CNN reporting 20 dead from shootings around the VA Tech campus.

Sounds pretty bad. Just what CNN and Fox need - another big story to fill their programming. And this will be another call for more gun control, which wouldn't have made a difference in most crimes committed with guns.

DaveE 04-16-2007 08:36 AM

CNN now reporting at least 22 dead, including the shooter, at least 21 wounded. Started at 7:15 this AM.

red-beard 04-16-2007 08:45 AM

Interesting, they have a guy handcuffed.

The shooter clearly didn't read the sign about the campus being a gun-free zone.

I guess your TRYING to be funny!

legion 04-16-2007 08:56 AM

No, I'm being sarcastic. I'm showing exactly what those signs do: they create a large population of people known to be unarmed. Easy pickin's for those who choose not to follow the signs.

This is a tragedy to be sure. The police couldn't get there in time to prevent 21 deaths. Just one other person with a gun on the campus could have stopped this short.

red-beard 04-16-2007 09:00 AM

Different reports

1 says the shooter is in custody to be charged with capital murder

1 says he is dead

+1

Who would you rather fight Wladimir Klitschko, or Pee Wee Herman?

Interesting that you say this, because it's exactly what I at first thought: ban guns. Take them all away, etc.

But then I calmed down and, as sad as this is, concluded it is an isolated incident, and it's the person shooting the gun, not the gun, that has caused this tragedy.

But don't think this won't show up in a Hillary/Obama sound byte today.

The reports also state that one person was killed in their dorm at one end of campus, and the other 20 were killed in class at the other end.

Two gunmen?

Rick Lee 04-16-2007 09:16 AM

Anyone who does this in VA and doesn't get killed in the process is still pretty much on a suicide mission, albeit a much slower process. VA means serious business about capital murder and if they caught the guy, rest assured, he will be executed and much sooner than had it happened in TX or FL too.

VaSteve 04-16-2007 09:16 AM

Hasty journalism. The discussion on charges for murder pertain to the guy that shot someone last fall...(I had to read it 6 times to be sure).

With the web and 24/7 news, they chuck anythhing up there and revise it later.

red-beard 04-16-2007 09:52 AM

We will see what the result will be. I do know that those students were "lawfully" unarmed. They obeyed the rules, making easier prey for the predator.

david914 04-16-2007 09:54 AM

Absolute tragedy. I'm bracing myself for the political fallout though. This is just more ammunition (pun intended) for the anti-gun crowd.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people.

Rick Lee 04-16-2007 09:58 AM

Sadly, VA is becoming more of a blue state every day. While the state gov't. has pretty much squelched all local attempts at gun control. I feel like it could be the Dutch boy with his thumb in the dike after this one.

FOX reports 32 dead, 21 injured. In some of the cell phone footage you can hear the gunshots.

red-beard 04-16-2007 10:06 AM

Wife declared today that she is going to get her CHL

VaSteve 04-16-2007 10:07 AM

Other than Rick, who I know is always carrying, do the rest of you?

I'm not sure I would want my kids to go to college where classmates are packing heat. This isn't the old west, the ME or Mogadishu. This is a premeditated massacre... people carrying wouldn't have prevented the entirety of this.

Yeah, he had time to aim between each one. Chilling.
