Gunman kills 21 on Virginia Tech campus

what is going on in our society these days?? too sad...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070416/ap_on_re_us/virginia_tech_shooting

BLACKSBURG, Va. - A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech on Monday, killing 21 people and wounding another 21 before he was killed, police said.

"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said university president Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified."

The university reported shootings at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus, beginning at about 7:15 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall that houses 895 people, and continuing about two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering building.

One student was killed in a dorm and the others were killed in the classroom, Virginia Tech Police Chief W.R. Flinchum.

After the shootings, all entrances to the campus were closed and classes canceled through Tuesday.

"There's just a lot of commotion. It's hard to tell exactly what's going on," said Jason Anthony Smith, 19, who lives in the dorm where shooting took place.

Aimee Kanode, a freshman from Martinsville, said the shooting happened on the 4th floor of West Ambler Johnston dormitory, one floor above her room. Kanode's resident assistant knocked on her door about 8 a.m. to notify students to stay put.

"They had us under lockdown," Kanode said. "They temporarily lifted the lockdown, the gunman shot again."

"We're all locked in our dorms surfing the Internet trying to figure out what's going on," Kanode said.

Madison Van Duyne, a student who was interviewed by telephone on CNN, said, "We are all in lockdown. Most of the students are sitting on the floors away from the windows just trying to be as safe as possible."

It was second time in less than a year that the campus was closed because of a shooting.

In August 2006, the opening day of classes was canceled and the campus closed when an escaped jail inmate allegedly killed a hospital guard off campus and fled to the Tech area. A sheriff's deputy involved in the manhunt was killed on a trail just off campus.

The accused gunman, William Morva, faces capital murder charges.

I've been back in the US for less than 24 hours after 2 weeks abroad.

Sad state of affairs in this country.

Well MSN..said it was an Asian Male who did the shooting, a few moments later they said an American Male...PC

Well Imus is off the HOOK now

They said the guns the Killer used were 2 9mm Handguns...he could have used any kind of gun, but chose 9mm handguns. At least he didn't use an Assualt Weapon...

AND WHY DIDN'T THE UNIVERSITY PICK UP ON THE FACT THAT THIS GUY WAS GETTING REALLY FLAKEY ON THEM...If he was a student, these guys just don't go off.

I'll be the first to say it. I know it's a knee jerk reaction, and might affect lots of people that had nothing to do with the event...

The blood dancers are already dancing. Blood dancers? The anti second amendment crowd, dancing in the blood of the victims whenever a tragedy like this happens.

Bethca this is what happened.

Asian Guy gets pissed with GF about breakup and possibly failure to make engineering cut, goes to Dorm and during arguement loses it.. Kills her and RA who is trying to intervene. Leaves Campus goes home says FK it, loads up an goes back to Campus enters building and goes from room to room killing people. Then when he is down to his last round or so, kills self.

There is an outside possiblity that it was 2 seperate incidences..wouldn't that be a kick in the head...

Its also possible this guy also made the Bomb threats as he was getting closer and closer to th edge.

Man what a fking day...actually the Media is really staying away from the gun issue and is focusing on the violence in society issue. Also that with these people there are warning signs, but most people are so preoccupied with their own lives they fail to notice them.

Now this may come as a shock..that I actually worked at one time..yeah I know OHHH NOOO Tabby working..but I digress.

We had a guy that never talked to anyone, the reason he would talk to me or anybody at all is if he knew they liked liked guns. Everybody knew he was a real gun nut and REALLY left him alone. One night after work I talked to him for abit and he said, " Before I found the Lord if they had ever fired me, I would have gone out in a blaze of glory."
