This is a surprise? Come on Kach!! Remember when you were young and bulletproof? We "knew it all" back then and only after you get older and more experienced do you realize what you do not know.
The turning point seems to be when your Mother and Father finally start appearing to be smarter, a whole lot smarter than you ever thought they were...

No kiddin'. When has anyone here ever met (or been) a 17-year-old that didn't know everything there is to know in the world and wasn't always 100% correct?

My plan is to take my son to an Autocross VERY SOON after he gets his license or learners permit, depending on the local AX rules.
This is usually a VERY humbling experience for any person let alone a 15 y/o. Many driving schools are in his future as well.

I'm gonna have to try to get to an Autocross soon... I'm SURE that I cannot drive my car as well as I'd want to. I'm 30, and I have the humility to know that I DON'T know.
Hell, when I think about cars like the CGT, if given the opportunity to drive one, I'd probably pass, because I don't know how to handle the power!

Half the people behind the wheel are below average drivers.

Hahahah, thanks for defining "average" for us, hahahah. I think that more than half of all drivers are less than competent when it comes to being able to think about the rules of the road and common sense.

I would say based on my instincts that more than half of the population are better than the average. There are some horrendous drivers out there but not many outstanding drivers (besides my buddy Phil).

I havn't run into this problem so much with my new liscensee. He seems to be pretty responsible so far. Part of that was an early education technique.Once, after he came home complaining that drifting wasn't as hard to control as his driver's ed teacher was making it out to be, we took him out on a frozen lake by our house. We used our willy's cj3a jeep in rear wheel drive. nothing to run into, but he spent about 3 hours trying to make it around a figure eight I set up. At the end of the night, I called over a professional driver friend of mine who made an absolute mockery of his attempts.
It was a very good experience for him, he not only got some good practice, but I think his ego was shrunk at least a little bit after being schooled by a 60 year old "gaffer". I think that the vast majority of teens on the road are quite inexperienced, but that very few of them seem to acknowledge that. I'll never forget when I went driving with my dad winter once. He felt that I was getting overconfidant in my abilities, so as I was going around a hairpin next to a field, he pulled the e-Brake on me, just for an instant, yelling "blowout!!" Even after he let the E- brake off, I was shaken up enough, and sideways enough that I ended up backwards in the middle of the field. All I could think was "what if there was another car? or a guardrail?" I think it had the desired result from my dad, because after that, I was always just a touch slower in winter. Kids are always going to think they're invincible, it's up to parents to try and bring them to reality at least a little bit.
