what authority does any cop have , to actually arrest an 18 year old student over this???

how stupid is that? surely a cop is familiar with the freedom of speech thing? it's not like he spraypainted his message on public or private property right??

Oh crap... I OWN A SKI MASK! I am now a international terrorist!

How did this happen to me (sob)... I was such a good boy... raised by good mis-west parents (sob)...

Must have been that liberal southern California upbringing (bastards)... then as I grew up I started eating sushi.... and dare I say it... croissants! Oh the slippery slope!

Let this be a lesson to all of you!

Maybe the action was because of a cover your ass mentality? Seems teachers may be afraid to be teachers?

The kid should go hustle up a publisher for a book.

I cannot think of one single charge that would warrant an arrest. This is so stupid I cannot believe it! We need to encourage our legislatures to stand for our freedom.

Just read several articles about this.

WAY over the f*cking line. WHAT THE F*CK is wrong with school administrators? Are they scraping them off the bottom of rocks and putting them in suits?

This is almost a no-win for anyone involved. If the teacher and administrator had not responded to the writing, and the student did present a clear threat to others, there would be calls for everyone's head for being negligent.

The district likely needs a clear threat assessment guideline where such a situation is assessed by people trained to do so -- and it needs to be made clear to students, staff, and the community that anything that suggests a student represents a threat to others or themselves will be responded to (not necessarily by the police) to ensure the safety of all involved.

As for your question about what is wrong with administrators? I'd say a litigious society all too quick to place blame, coupled with high profile violent crimes occurring in school, have likely made everyone who works in schools a little tense.

My major issue with this is it was an essay assigned in a Creative Writing class. I would expect some off the wall stuff in a Creative Writing class. Where else are you going to openly express yourself, Biology class?

As a teen I used to sketch all the time. Lot's of Sci Fi fantasy stuff. Frazetta was my idol. People used to ask me if I had nightmares. I guess today I'd be getting expelled and arrested.

I would have been arrested and expelled along with you -- not for "expressing" myself, but for "weapons" charges.

From the 6th grade on, I carried a pocket knife with me all the time -- sometimes even the teachers borrowed it!

You're right, no one here as posted the essay, but when the police go on record stating that it targeted no one or place in particular one has to question the validity of the charge. That being said I'm curious why Tom Clancy remains free to move around. After all hasn't he written many books that include acts of terrorism against the United States?

When I was in highschool our shop teacher let kids bring in old guns to restore. He helped them reblue the guns and it would be common to see a kid walking down the hall w/ a shotgun.

We also had a science teacher who was an outdoorsman and hunter. He was concerned about us handling guns safelly durning hunting season and gave our class a hunters safety course.

Times have really changed and not for the better.
