Why do chevy pickups want to race a 911?

I was coming home from Poker night at 2am, on a lonely four lane stretch of highway when somebody in a Chevy pickup came up behind me. He pulled next to me and was surging his truck like he wanted to race me. I was just minding my business and driving the speed limit (70). I was listening to music and just enjoying my glide down the road.

After about two miles of being egged on, I non-chalantly dropped out of 5th gear into fourth at 70 miles per hour (tach is at about 3,500). When I was ready, I pressed my foot to the floor and he did the same. His big Chevy sounded like a beast from hell with a deep roar and he pulled away from me, till my tack hit about 5 grand then I caught him and passed him. As I hit 6 grand, he was becoming a dot in my mirror. Then I shifted to fifth and zipped up past 130 something... When I was about two miles ahead, I drifted back down to the speed limit to coast home.

He finally caught up and wanted to race some more. I just cruised at the speed limit and enjoyed my music. He rode next to me for miles, then pulled in front of me, hoping to get another chance... Not tonight, you had your chance. He wanted badly to prove his truck was bad ass.

Why do these guys have to prove how fast they are when they see a 911? I was thinking, this is so juvenile... but I sure did enjoy smoking him.

It all comes back to the nut that holds the steering wheel.
Your results may vary.
Play safe!

How come I never get anyone to challenge me when I'm cruising in the VW Thing

I've toasted a few ricers in the past that weren't parked, really....

Jeffrey,

There is this threatening andorphine or pheromone that permeates most male drivers that are in proximity to a Porsche. The thing that REALLY annoys me is when they come up behind you at a light and creep up as close as they can to your tail and look at you like "Whatta ya gunna do about it". Problem is I quit smoking lately and have a ****ty attitude and I'm a big nervous boy. I've jumped out of my 930 a couple of times to confront these penial challenged punks and luckily nothing went down...Probably for my sake. Anyway- I notice this race phenomenon with just about every car and truck especially BMW's. They cant stand you and perceive you as a threat to there perceived *****inness. Its accually fun to let the guy romp on it in front of his ol lady from light to light and then when the opportunity serves you, you go to boost- ( Kinda like afterburners) then SEE-YA! These dweebs feel so bad they will usually floor it way to long and finally pass you after you let off because there is a light, cop, obstacle, traffic in front you. and they will perceive or think they won...Oh well.
Then they do the shady left turn in shame...They know you kicked there panties in...Thats all that matters. Besides a Turbo is a better looking car than any beemer and they know it....

My brother took care of one of these guys back in the 70's on Long Island. Some dude has ben tailing him with the high beams on. After two verbal warnings my brother strolled out of his Porsche after stopping at a red light and knocked out the tailgaters headlights with a hammer, he then got back in his car and drove off

I find that looking straight at them, pushing my sunglasses down my nose an inch or two so they can see my eyeballs peering over them at them and giving them the "penis pump" gesture usually works pretty well.

Either that or just give them the "pinkie" gesture. That one usually puts them in their place too.

When someone wants to race me, I usually accellerate hard in first and then short-shift into second at 5,000, then keep it below 4,000. This makes them think I am racing but they blow past me when I shift. Better they get the ticket than me.

I drive a Chevy truck, and I never try to race Porsches...

I find that looking at them, looking at their car, then looking at them and laughing seems to work at deflating their ego without the need to race. Especially if they have their girl friend with them.

I find that driving a Baja Race car with bumpers DESIGNED to crash into other cars tends to keep the loons at bay.

People usually don’t try to race me in the 911. Maybe because it is my wife’s car and it has Hibiscus flowers all over it.

True.. "the peer over the sunglasses down the nose" thing , has always struck fear in my heart.

All jokins aside...What is a penis pump gesture? Thankfully, I have no experience...(Yet)..I will try the sunglass slide and pinky pump and will report back on the progress . But what is it seriously!

I just ignore them ... no reason/need to demonstrate anything .. they want to win .. up to them, I know is not true.

I may just print a bunch of 'DE Invites' and handle them to that kind of people.

I hate to admit it, but the truck driver actually won...the reason I say this is because he was finally able to "tug your chain" until you reacted the way he wanted you to. Since he was able to elicit this reponse, you empowered him. Just ignore trucks & ricers.

Ever think its because they like to hear the sound of a Porsche flat six at full tilt, and to see it pull away? I'd love to race with a Lamborghini Miura down a 1/4mile dragstrip, even though my 944 would get whooped. Just the sound and seeing a sports car on it is rather enjoyable.

Granted, I don't have a 911. But when ever I drive my track car (325i) around town, somebody always tries to race. I don't know if it is the 17" OZ rims with the Brembo's peeking through, or the tone of the exhaust that eggs them on, but I usually just roll down the window and tell them:"Fat f***ing chance" then roll the window back up. Wow, does that piss 'em off!

I see no reason to risk the lives of people around me, or my car, just to blow the doors off every POS that pulls up along side to drag.... unless I'm at the track

Granted in my youth, I did my fare share of stop light drags in my '55.... but that was high school, I was invincible then

Over the winter, my dad and I had just dropped oh his 525 at the dealer and we were driving the loaner X3 3.0 back home on the highway. All the sudden we see a dark grey F430 come screaming up behind us. My dad moves over, punches it, then catches up with the guy going about 130. Now obviously the F430 could absolutely smoke us, but everyone involved just wanted to have fun, so for about 10 or 12 miles, we just kept passing each other, he would drop back to like 60mph then proceed to burn past us up to about 150 and just kept fooling around. Probably one of the most fun drives I have ever had. That X3 had some guts too. Nothing like having some fun at 7am on a saturday morning on a lonely highway
