Suggestions on '94 Chevy S10 intermittent running problem?
Vehicle in question is a 1994 Chevy S10 V6 Vortec 4X4. I bought it not running. Fuel pump fuse was blown. Started right up after replacing the fuse. It hasn't been driven more than a few miles since. Today I'm driving along and I feel it lose power and die. Pulled off the road. Several attempts to restart failed so I called a tow truck... then it started. Cancelled the tow and started driving. It would get a mile or so and then die again.
Took it to a chain repair shop assuming it needed a fuel pump. The shop got it to die several times with a pressure gauge in place. It's not losing fuel pressure. There are no trouble codes showing up. Any suggestions? |
How about a new fuel filter, then pulling all the injectors and cleaning them?
Also, if the car is getting warm, wonder if something in the electronic ignition is getting warm and shorting out? Then cooling a bit and running until it gets warm again? |
Bad ignition module? Cam Position sensor? Bad Coil?
Next time it dies, see if you get spark. |

2 things
1. Module 2. Coil I would bet money on it. |
Sounds like fuel filter...

If it will start right up when the engine cools, it is probably a pickup coil. This exact thing happened to my '92. Pull the distributor and you can replace the pickup coil for under $100. It was a pain to figure out though.
It could also be the fuel pump. They do go out on these. Get the heavy duty replacement not the stock replacement and it will last forever. I have had lots of these S-10's. Good trucks. My dad's old '91 that my brother drives now has 211k on it and still runs strong. |
My buddy had one of these, and it would run fine for a while then quit, etc. Turns out part of the wiring harness was melted to the engine somewhere. It would intermittently ground out, but not all the time.
