Neuter a feral cat?

Neuter a feral cat?

Which way is better. the old knife method, or the old rubber band method?

RoninLB 04-25-2007 03:44 PM

i just bring mine in to one of those animal lovers 24hr emergency clinic places. They do it for free and I'm confident they know what they're doing. Animal support groups are all over.

Jeez, are you an animal lover or what?

One word: clinic.

We used to take them and put their head in a boot and use a rubber band around the jewels, then cut the critters off.

Cat was none too happy but it worked...

I'm even willing to donate to the cause...say, $10 USA. Anybody else?

:D I have a flying buddy who used to do basically the same. He claims that if the cat sees who did it, the cat will remember forever. :D

I know what my wife, daughters and I would do to a stray feral cat, but I better keep that to myself. ;) :D

We did it to keep the claws from flying everywhere. Worked very well...

Have a very good friend who used a .22 on feral cats. Know what you mean.

Porsche-O-Phile 04-25-2007 05:39 PM

Sure - I'm in, if for no other reason than to keep the barbarians at bay.

Joeaksa 04-25-2007 05:45 PM

You guys would never make it on a farm...

Slak, there has to be someone in your area who will do the job for free. Call a Vet and ask around and they usually know of someone.

pwd72s 04-25-2007 06:05 PM

You know, I did the "shoot, shovel, and shut up" routine with what I thought was a feral cat once. A few days later, a little girl rang our doorbell. She showed me a photo of a cat, asked if I'd seen him, because he was missing and she loved him very much...
:( Better to pay a clinic, methinks. You learn by experience...

Okay, we got 20...here in the states, a vet usually charges around 50. Slakjaw, what's it cost up there? Or have you even asked? I figure we need 3 more willing to kick in...what? 3 gallons of gas to save a cat's life? Gimme an address, I'll send check or cash...your choice. (edit)...I just realized that St. Paul isn't in Canada...it only feels that way. ;)

Nor do I have any desire to. Been vegetarian for the last 20 years. Don't see any need/reason to change just for the sake of what everyone else tells me I'm supposed to like.

Did not say a word about eating the critter. Its just that if you grow up around animals, neutering a cat is not a big deal. We did this to cows and so on all the time, its life around a farm.

Go eat a carrot and leave me alone... :)

Porsche-O-Phile 04-25-2007 07:36 PM

LOL! Yea I get it. Just saying diffrent strokes. I suppose if it was post-WW3 I could kill dogs or cats or whatever with my bare hands and eat 'em, but that's another discussion, like the whole "would you resort to cannibalism to survive" thing.

I suppose I could do the castration thing to an animal if I had to, but ideally I'd want to sedate the thing first. We're talking about a living, breathing creature that feels pain and hurt like we do after all.

dhoward 04-25-2007 07:41 PM

Cannibalism.

Probably about the same thing I would do.

slakjaw 04-26-2007 05:46 AM

First off, a friend of mine is having the cat problem not me. I do not want nor will I accept money from anyone to have this thing neutered. I talked to my friend, we are going to trap the cat, and look for a vet who will do the neutering then let it go again. My friend does not want to shoot the cat as he lives next to a farm and it catches mice and other rodents.

Joe – IMO a stove pipe works better then a boot :D
