I am not understanding the use of the duct tape. Is this an improvised capo?

If its real it is awesome.

Its under the strings so I don't think its working as a capo or changing the scale of the neck. Its probably to keep the open notes from ringing out for too long.

Not really my thing (more like a piano than a guitar, IMO), but it took him a long time to develop the technique and its impressive to watch.

Impressive! That brings back memories of the only time I've seen Stanley Jordan playing two guitars at the same time with his "tapping technique"...Thanks!

I think the duct tape is a dampener to keep the upper half of the strings from vibrating. Whenever I tap an open string like this guy I get two tones. But then again, I suck, so it's likely I have no idea what I'm talking about.

The duct tape is a dampener. I heard an interview w/ Jimmy Page once and he did the same thing with Kleenex when he did the guitar riff on Herman's Hermits "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter" (I don't know how I remember this *****, half the time I can't remember what I had for dinner last night)

Technique reminds me of Stanley Jordan. I saw him in concert back in the '80s. After the concert his dad picked him up in an old station wagon.

Stairway to Heaven...

This is just amazing...

Wow, thanks for those vids Lee! I guess it was in the early '90s when I saw Jordan at a local college auditorium and we had front row seats. I had always been a rock & blues person, and didn't know anything about him...two hours later, I picked my jaw up off the floor and floated home . He was solo, played StH (probably the only cover or song I recognized), and it was simply an amazing display of virtuosity!

Every time I see somebody doing this, I think of the sage advice given by a fellow Pelican:

Yes, the duct tape ensures that the strings don't make any noise when he's not touching them. If you look on the "chapman stick" you can see a piece of felt up at the top that does the same kind of thing.

that dude with the Chapman stick is pretty awesome. Reminds me of Tony Levin but this dude's sound is more like Chaquico's new age stuff.

the "hammer on " technique looks deceptively simple. His technique is damned near perfect, no production noise to be heard.

That face looks like he's trying to pass a kidney stone...silently. Funny as hell, and to be honest, I had a hard time paying attention to the guitar work because of it.

So Wolfe, what kind of guitar are you throwing in the trash? Inquiring mind needs to know.
