Bugs!

Last night I drove from Thunderhill to the Bay Area after a great day at the track. It was about 8PM when I entered a dense cloud of insects that stretched for nearly 10 miles! I had to stop twice to scrape the bugs off my windshield and headlights.

This morning I gave the car a good wash. My 6 year old offered to help. Amazingly, she got all the bugs off the front bumper by herself. She did a great job. Basically, she washed the car while I cleaned up the wheels. Man I love those wheels. Functional car jewelry. The bugs you see on the bumper are AFTER I sprayed most of them off with a high pressure nozzle.

I've owned the FM10's for about 7 years. I do love the weight and look, although the brightness is starting to wear on me. I might of gone with a more subtle finish. But, cleaning them is the absolute worst. These 3 piece wheels have so many 90 deg angles and seams that is can take you almost an hour a wheel.

Beautiful car! Your car is on the Fikse website, right?

I don't want to bore you with the details, but my Fikse's are quick and easy to clean now that I'm doing it right. If you're interested, I'll tell you how it's done.

Actually, yes I was one of the first to have the FM10's. If you check on their site, they have my car with the FM5's (my brothers) and they also have me mistakely as a 930 also with the FM5's. You would think with this much press they would throw me a discount. From constant use as track wheel and being driven in many times rainy conditions, the wheels build up an accululation of track dust, brack dust, and grease that collect in all the crevices. I can't usually get to them until the next weekend so this sticks pretty hardily to the bare aluminum lips. After about 7 years of this, it gets harder and harder. Still look reasonible clean. .

Agreed. A round, soft bristle brush makes cleaning a pretty easy task. The optional satin anodized finish from Fikse also reduces the flash factor a bit.

Moses, did you run the Rota's at Thunderhill at all? Any photos?

I spray on Simple Green and work a paintbrush into the cracks between spoke and wheel and lug holes. I have a wegde shaped wheel brush for between spokes. Wipe the rim and you're done. Five minutes max and the wheels always look new.

I have that issue with the picture... always wanted the poster. Phil Hill used to do some GREAT writing for R&T. I always loved reading his perspective on the cars & the racing.

Moses, what a beautiful car.

When I was 18, I drove across Canada in a LeCar. I often drove at night to make decent time. One night I drove through a HUGE cloud of moths. A few minutes later, the car started overheating. The front of the car was covered in moths... enough to block airflow to the radiator.

First, I didn't buy it. It was given to me. Second, if I were buying a 911 for the first time it would be a Targa. Nothing like it on a beautiful spring day. Driving on the track with the top off is wonderful.

Too bad you can't see the huge smile on my face in the picture.

Mother says, "Why didn't U say so...you big dummy, then I wouldn't have to have worried about your having common sense." Mother suddenly loves your Targa now.
