On another board someone organized a battle of the bands (kind of like the college basketball tourney, grouped bands into artificial regions, put them to head to head votes, and found a winner). That was cool, but since you asked me, Pink Floyd gets my vote.

Ladies...Ladies....
CREAM !!!!! then Floyd & Zep.....but CREAM showed the world what rock really was. I saw Pink Floyd at the Hollywood Bowl doing the Dark Side of the Moon tour...in "quad"(remember "Quad"?? )....they only sold a perfect square section of seats with speaker towers at each (4) corner....this was so long ago...there was still a "reflective pool" of water in front of the stage...that's all seats now. I literally had to CARRY my friend back to the car....he was drunk, I was smart, I didn't drink...I took acid !!! and let's not forget ... the WHO & Jimmy & the Doors & the Monkeys...OK, just kidding on that last one !!!!!!!!

No way any of those are the best. Are they all great? Yes. Having said that, it's tough for me to decide. I've got a ton of music, and there are a lot of great bands:
Eagles Doobie Bros. Allman Bros. CSN&Y Santana ZZ Top Lynyrd Skynyrd Marshall Tucker Band Van Halen (Roth) Steely Dan Shoot, I could go on and on. If you haven't figured it out, I'm in my late 40's.

If I had to pick from the list, it would be Pink Floyd. To this day, I still listen to "Animals", "Dark Side of the Moon" and "Wish You Were Here" all the time.
I think an honorable mention needs to go to AC/DC. Really great band that has been successfully doing their own thing for 3 decades. The early stuff (the Bon Scott era) has some real classics. Mike

Ummmm Zep....
The music, the image, the mystique, the dead drummer. All requirements for a great rock band.

I know this is all in fun... but there really is no best of anything.
However... there was this little band that Paul McCartny used to play with, what was their name?

The trinity of influence:
Like them personally or not, or think they are too mainstream to be cool, you cannot deny the influence the above placed on good 'ol rock n' roll. One thing's for certain, whoever is/will be considered the best band of all time, there's a pretty good chance it will be British. Last edited by Sarc; 12-17-2005 at 08:50 AM.. |
