GPS/Sat Nav Recommendations?
Hi Guys
I'm about to cough the coin for a portable in-car GPS with voice directions etc... I'm looking at the Tomtom and Navman brands at the moment, and would like to stay under $500 What are you guys using?

I just got the garmin nuvi 350 from amazon for $ 388. My second gps and I am very pleased with this one. Check out their website. This is a very nice peice of electronics. About the size of a pack of cards. A 3 1/2 inch screen that is very easy to see in full sun.

Second Garmin. Have tried them all and return to the Garmin's. Their warranty service is excellent and product very good. I own 4 of them...

I use Tomtom 5/6 on my Palm Lifedrive and Palm Treo 680. The software is good and works. It is easier to use than the Magellan I used before.
I bought a TomTom for my 78 old father. It was about $400 and it has a built in Li-ion battery to use for "short" distance work. I think it will last for about 2-3 hours without charging. Of course it comes with a lighter adapter and an in house adapter. Uses exactly the same software as my Palm unit.

Go buy MS streets and Trips 2007 with the USB GPS retails for $119....you can find it on sale for $80.00
Has all the features of the stand alone GPS. spend the difference on a nice jotto desk laptop mount. Oh...you can also plug the audio output into your receiver (depending on make) and use your "GPS" as a 12" to 15" video system..play MP3's..etc..etc. With a wireless broadband card in the laptop...you can also get real-time traffic maps, get weather updates...and heaven forbid, maybe even do some work on the laptop. Just another option. ![]() HelmetHead |

I have used the Garmins for years and just lately got one with the touch screen. Sooo much easier and faster than the older versions. I love progress!

Quick question, how accurate is the speed reading on these units? I assume damn near perfect, but my speedo is off by 4-5% if it's right and I'm wondering which to trust.

Len,
I have taken several of mine up in the plane and used the $50k GPS system there to compare. They all have been within .5 mph, in otherwords just as accurate. When comparing the speedo in various cars, the GPS is always much more accurate. The older the car the more chance that the tires have been changed from what was used in the beginning or the speedo is worn resulting in a screwy reading. Quickest way to check these out is to take two GPS units in the car and check it that way.

For my F350 dually tow vehicle, I just bought the Kenwood flipup screen system with their Garmin GPS ad on module and multi-disk CD-ROM changer. It is great and I can switch between the GPS screen and a DVD which my wife and the two English Bull dogs on the back seat love to watch. I am usually listening to MP3s except when using the nav system so the video idea was for them. A 7 inch screen is sure better than the old Street Pilot 3 I used to have!

I wouldn't want to carry my laptop every day nor would I want to give up the space it uses. For the occasional trip I suppose it would be fine but for everyday use, portability, last minute stuff...you can't beat these.

Yes, I just wanted something small and very portable. It will share drive time in the Porsche, our daily driver and any number of work or hire cars when I'm working.
Thanks for the advice on the Garmin, it was a good purchase. Cheers
