I understand the concept, but in English what do I need to do?
|
This appears to be browser independent. Can anyone verify?
Anyone making changes to the registry should be very careful. |
It's a configuration in the hidden configs of firefox

Wayne: Won't this just cause congestion in the PP servers from all the hacked clients browsing the grid girls thread?

wow...thanks Rick it worked well for FF.

Wow, I never thought I'd see a webmaster recommending this....

Thanks for that info I am going to do it at work tomarrow too. |
I'm surprised that no one has brought this up yet for the Firefox users. But, there is an extension called Fasterfox that will handle these configurations for you and also allows you to exceed the RFC specifications if you so choose.
Fasterfox allows you to tweak many network and rendering settings such as simultaneous connections, pipelining, cache, DNS cache, and initial paint delay. Dynamic speed increases can be obtained with the unique prefetching mechanism, which recycles idle bandwidth by silently loading and caching all of the links on the page you are browsing. The main configuration screen is very simple, just a list of pre-defined settings chosen from radio buttons. For most people, this is all they will need. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1178840111.jpg However, if you click on the Custom button, you will see some more configuration tabs across the top. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1178840149.jpg You can easily set custom settings for Cache. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1178840324.jpg As well as set the number of connections that you can establish with web servers. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1178840471.jpg However, for the greatest overall increase in browser performance comes when you enable Prefetching on the Firefox tab. Now, a lot of webmasters are up in arms about this because this does not adhere to the listed specs and essentially makes the users browser non-compliant. They complain because it puts additional stress on their servers. However, smart webmasters know that they can prevent this by adding two simple lines to robots.txt. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1178840903.jpg |
Works great...noticable immediately.
Thanks |
Fasterfox is interesting as it caches all the links on a page - so if you were on Google search results, it would cache all the links? Be careful as that will use up a lot of your bandwidth! :) Because you won't be going to all those links.

One more request for this in english

Thanks Wayne and Steve for the firefox one, seems to work faster with Firefox!

Oh this is good. I only wish there was a 'speed Windows xp up on a laptop that's running REALLY slow lately to the point where I expect it to crash any day now'...
I shall be trying this for my FF. I don't like to mess with reg keys as sometimes you can mess things up (ask me how I know...) Edit to add: there is no sarcasm intended for the first sentence. Also, is the general consensus that the fix for FF in the settings better than the fasterfox extension? Which should I use/get? Cheers guys! :D |

Laptop: Does the fan seem to be on high more often? I am dealing with a laptop at the moment, that reacts like yours. If the slow down is fairly recent, there is a small chance you have the 'oops patch' from Microsoft. They screwed up another update recently, but not every computer is having problems. The laptop I am dealing with is getting better, but more stuff has to be done tomorrow. Too tired tonight. Dave |
People still use IE?
Interesting. |
I just performed the mod for Firefox that was listed on page one of this thread and it has dramatically improved the page-loading speed.
Thanks for the heads-up guys! |
IP itself is a primitive protocol (as are many of the application infrastructures built around it) imo, but that's not necessarily a knock...it is what it is. The increase in hardware & network speeds have masked the gross inefficiencies of many protocols and applications. As a systems/networking geek, I shudder when I look "under the covers"...like seeing hotdogs being made...you don't want too :). I've been aware of how HTTP connections worked for years, but never knew this tip...thanks Wayne!
|
Hey, i would like to take advantage of this fix also. I read the articles, but still don't know exactly how to execute the hack.
Would someone please walk me through this for IE? |
Sure worked for me! Thanks guys!

This page has a good set of step by step instructions.

Not to come off as condescending but if you ask these questions you should not be fooling with the registry settings. The registry mentioned holds the key parameters and configuration settings necessary for your operating system to work properly. You could easily cripple your system to the point of needing a reinstall. That said, I would recommend taking a few minutes to understand more about the registry and how to back-up before editing (this varies between OS versions). Here is a good write-up to get you going: http://www.helpdesk.umd.edu/topics/troubleshooting/os/windows_2000/555/ Also: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310516 |
A lot of us are just plain computer ignorant
I managed to install the Fasterfox software, but can't seem to be able to follow the instructions to the manager like the screenshot shown here. So, I don't know if I enabled it or not.
I gotta agree with Rick, if you don't know what this is all about, be careful. I was just going to use the prepackaged stuff and I can't even do that. |

But for general browsing I agree - Mozilla is much better than IE. Generally I find FF to be considerably faster. Still lots of problems using FF with a widescreen monitor. I have installed IE Lite which allows one to have certain sites open in IE while using FF but it slows everything down because the site will open in FF then switch to IE. I guess its better than having to use both browsers at the same time. |

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419 I use Firefox at work and using the extension above I can load any page in Firefox including the Microsoft Sharepoint stuff that's all over my intranet. |
Thanks Steve, I'll try it tonight.
|
Milt: I found it very easy to follow the instructions in the first link posted by Steve. Print them out, close all but one instance of Firefox and go for it. Here it is again: http://blog.brainstormbrand.com/productivity/2007/04/9-steps-to-speed-upbroadband-firefox-browsing
Note: The first step asks you to type "about:config" in the address bar. Make sure you type accurately as it is easy to type "about.config".....you need to use the colon (but no quotes). Also, realize that when double clicking on certain config lines the value will flip from True to False or vice versa. When double clicking on others a popup box will appear where you can replace existing values. |
Thanks once again, Rick. I went thru and all of the values were what was on the page already but one. I closed the page, closed FF, restarted and went back to our thread here that had the link to the speed test. I guess the physics will always be the same because my speed was unchanged. I also noticed no change in viewing a thread page with a lot of pics. So, I will just either get 3000 kbs DSL or wait it out until they finish the FIOS system in my neighborhood.

Steve and Wayne, the info was GREAT! Much improved quicker page loading!

For those IE users who didn't follow the link masraum gave:
0. Backup registry 1. Click Start - Run. 2. Type "regedit" and click OK. 3. In the left pane navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings 4. In the right pane you should see the contents of Internet Settings. 5. Check Regedit's right-hand column for the following two lines (values): MaxConnectionsPerServer MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server 6. If these values are present, right-click on the first value (MaxConnectionsPerServer), select Modify from the drop-down menu, click Decimal, and set the Value data field to 6. Repeat this process for the second value (MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server). 7. If these lines (values) are not listed, right-click on the white region of Regedit's right-hand column, click New, and then click DWORD Value. 8. Enter MaxConnectionsPerServer for the name of the new DWORD Value and press Enter. The new value should now appear in Regedit's right-hand column. 9. Right-click the new value and click Modify. 10. As in step six, click Decimal and set the Value Data field to 6, then click OK. 11. Repeat steps seven through 10 using MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server as the new DWORD Value name instead of MaxConnectionsPerServer. 12. Close Regedit and test Internet Explorer. |

Just came across this... in the settings you can set the number of
connections also set some other neat stuff. I had done what Wayne suggested, I set my connections to 8. When I installed the IE7 Pro it picked up my settings ! I like the IE& Pro http://www.download.com/IE7Pro/3000-12867_4-10700736.html?tag=lst-0-1 |
After installing the Fasterfox, I found several images would come up broken up, partial, or heavily pixelated. Also, for the first time, youtube videos would stop shortly after starting. A local computer guy said Fasterfox sometimes causes that, and disabling it helped. The problems still persisted, and I increased my cache from 50 MB to 100 MB and so far everything's good. I posted a thread about it, but nobody here responded. I have little idea of what I'm doing. Does the cache setting seem about right now?
