Planes, Porsches and boats

Hi!

I went to an FBO at Van Nuys airport, that was hosting a brunch in conjunction with the local Porsche dealer. The planes were mostly geared towards private pilots, but there were a few that were more for the corporate crowd. Most of the planes had glass cockpits, but a few still had the analog instruments. All street model Porsches were there, but unfortunately, they decided not to bring the CGT or GT's. I tried to get a few pics of the Porcshe girls, but they were not so photogenic. Enjoy.

Of all the airplanes on that ramp that I would be interested in, the one I like best is the Diamond Twin Star.

The Diamond planes looked a lot like the model planes I am around, just on a bigger scale. I did like that the props had a weird de-icing system. There were three small tubes at the base of the blades and behind the spinner, one tube that was stationary coming out of the engine area that squirted the solution into a centrifugal device that then sprayed each blade. The leading edges also had thousands of laser cut holes that let the solution spread over the edges.

If I understood correctly, the Diamond Twin does not need a multi-engine rating.

Those marketing types! Even the Cessna 337, which had one engine pushing and one pulling, required a multi rating.

If one of those Thielert 1,7 diesels were to fail below VMC a multi ticket wouldn't just be legally required, it would mean the difference between crashing right side up or inverted. One of the things they teach you when you get your multi ticket is how to ensure the former.

Why anyone would ever pursue a "limited to centerline thrust only" multiengine rating is beyond me. Is VMc demo REALLY that hard?!?!

Nice pictures.

I have a question about "glass cockpits".

I have some good polarized Bass fishing sunglasses, however they do strange things to cell phone displays. Is there any kind of eyewear warning or suggestion that comes with the glass cockpits?

Hmmm, repeat after me "performance based navigation....."

Just about everything can be had in glass these days. You would not believe the fight I had in my latest airspace project to actually keep conventional nav stars published.......

What does a new BE35 go for these days?

Has anyone here flown the Twin star? I would be interested in some first hand impressions.

Great pictures, I love the DC3, that airplane has a special place in my heart, an incedent with one changed my outlook on a lot of things....
