Best anti-virus software for the money?
My Norton subscription runs out next week and I have not been satisfied with them at all. It seems to slow down my laptop, I get viruses all the time, I still have to use Adaware to remove spyware every other day or so and I'm just wondering what I'm paying them for.
I need to make a decision in the next few days, but the catch is that I'l have a new laptop in about another week or so after my Norton subs. runs out. If I buy another service and install it on my current laptop, can I load it onto my new laptop soon thereafter? BTW, I didn't like McAfee when I had that either.

Go to Staples and get CA's Internet Security Suite. Smallest footprint in the industry.
With instant off and rebates you'll get it for free so if you don't like it you don't care. They are in "gain market share/customer acquisition" mode and have deep enough pockets to give the product away for years. The division breaks even giving it away so the suits understand how profitable it can be once they have larger market share and more renewals. I did a year contract in the Consumer Security group. CA religously honor their rebates. Friend I have known for 15 years manages the rebate fulfillment company so on the slim chance you did have a problem we can deal with it with one phone call. Just don't install the firewall portion. It's really aggresive and can be annoying until it's "trained". But then again when I left they were working on improving the AI and it may already be in the current release. One nice thing is CA release Virus signatures daily, (except Sunday) where Norton and McAfee do it once maybe twice a week. They have this thing they call "Follow the Sun" Wherever the sun is shining they have a crew evaluationg threats.

Actually the one that I keep going back to that is easiest to use, doesn't seem to conflict with other programs and works well is the FREE version of the AVG anti-virus software. They have been around for years and does automatic daily updates. Never had a problem with it. You can check it out here: http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

AVG free (like Kurt said).
For really Free, Linux. If you insist on paying, Mac. But AVG free will do it if you stick with Windows.

I use AVG on my home PC. Norton was a resource hog.
For kicks I loaded up a second drive with Ubuntu and had no issues. All my devices worked out of the box...even the troublesome iPod I installed the Beryl desktop and am thus far not inclined to revert back to the XP drive and instead a reformat might be coming...

I rather like Kaspersky, myself.
It's caught stuff several other programs can't see at all, and removed stuff that disabled other programs.

AVG is free and it works well. Norton and McAfee can cause all sorts of problems because they try to do too much. A simple, free AV is all you need...

In an earlier thread on this topic, someone recommended Avast. I am running it on Vista Enterprise laptop and it is pretty good. I think the Professional version is $39, or about the same as a Norton renewal.
And as masraum said, Trend Micro rocks too. But I like it as an enterprise product better than the stand alone version I demo'ed.

I used Norton till I got fed up with it slowing down my pc. Then I went to Trend Micro which was great till the 2007 version which SUCKS!!!!!!! I've had to disable most of its features to keep my PC running!
CA internet didn't get get a thumbs up either, check the review! http://review.zdnet.com/internet-security-firewall/ca-internet-security-suite/4505-3667_16-32205024.html This could be a winner! The Shield Deluxe http://www.pcsecurityshield.com/lp/shield-deluxe-1.aspx?trk=WTK&affid=650

I just ditched my sluggish Trend Micro and downloaded AVG! WOW, what a difference. My machine is back to normal! Thank you Rick Lee for starting this thread!
